On a positive 20 less people have drowned in the Murray Darling this year . Can’t the farmers just get their water from the tap like normal people ?
Wiz, that's a really dumb question mate. How do you expect a farmer feeding livestock on 500,000 acres to just turn on a tap to get water when they rely on that water from the river system that is obviously been mis managed? If you've never lived and or worked on large stations you wouldn't comprehend the farmers plight.
Monto, I think Wiz is just trying to make a light hearted joke.
Monto , it seems like basic logic to me . I’d stick my water hose on the closest tap and fill up my water tank . Job done , and no more whinging about the bloody drought .
Seriously, farmers are either not very bright or just like complaining .....
on a serious note , can anyone tell me why farmers and the government aren’t digging dams out whilst they’re dry so they can hold more water next time the floods hit ? There’s a dam at Goulburn called Pejar dam ( yeah not exactly a name I’d like to get my towns drinking water from ). They have drought and the thing is bone dry and as hard as concrete . Then the rains come and the thing is overflowing down the weir for months . Why the fuck don’t they have every CAT excavatior in town digging the fuck outta it ? There must be 1000 of them sitting idle within 50kms of town . I’m sure if they asked for volunteers the locals would happlily bring their toys in for a dig if it meant they’d have townwater next time it didn’t rain for a while .
You are in fine form Wiz - shame Monto is having troubles keeping up.
Absolute disgrace! I can guarantee that if some of these politicians and those responsibe for this mis management lived on the land they would certainly see things differently.
Monto you amaze me with your lack of ??????????????????????????
Barnicle Joyce does supposedly "live on the land" and is the one person who made a fortune out of this water debacle - you must live in Tamworth where they ALL love this fine upstanding adulterous christian representative who bones his staff while ex wifey was at home looking for a garden tap to fill the tank from.
It is the politicians living out there who are responsible, plus the toothless law enforcement Water Authority who turn a blind eye to the massive water theft as well.
THEY GET THE MONEY SO DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ANYONE ELSE!
Sir Col, Im not talking about Barnaby Joyce! For the most part I wouldnt trust a politician just as much as I wouldnt trust a used car salesman. Im referring to the average fair dinkum Aussie hard working farmer. You know the ones who use stock horses covering thousands of acres of land to muster cattle or sheep who shake your hand as confirmation its a done deal! Not the modern day wimps or the weekend supposed farmers! The men and women who get up before the sun rises and are still working when its long gone down! The folks who never have holidays due to the multitude of responsibility that farm life entails. Wiz, try just turning the tap on and filling up your water tank on 18000 acres with a few hundred head of cattle with no water in your dams and let me know how you go. Wiz, farmers are much brighter than you think! If it wasnt for the farmer Wiz you probably waouldnt have food on your table or meat in your freezer! Theyre much tougher and work a thousand times harder than your average city slicker will ever comprehend.
Ahh Monts you are describing the Classic Catch 22.
Farmers can't farm because they don't have water.
No water = the inability to raise stock = NO income.
Sowewhere in the vicinity of 70% of Australian farmers are dependent on charities to feed and clothe their families so how are they gong to affor d the diesel to run the machinery to dig the dams deeper?
Calssic example is Warwick/Stanthorpe.
Currently the pipeline project from Storm King and Leslie(?) Dams is under way.
Both dams are pretty close to empty so the pipeline is to transport political hot air
BUT I DIGRESS - both these dams are shallow dams but CANNOT be dredged due to the Granite Rock base of the dams.
Case of dammed if they try and dammed if they can't.
Storm King Dam near full
Storm King Dam a few days ago.
Note the jetty is the same one in both pics.
Yes, Sir Col its certainly a catch 22 all right! The water doppage is very dire indeed! The Coolmunda Dam is now only at 8.7% and the Goondiwindi Shire is about to raise water ristrictions. The farmers in this area havent seen droughts this bad in a very, very, very long time. I was in Goondiwindi yesterday and believe me the sheep are basically eating dirt and the cattle what few I could see were thin, undernourished and eating tree leaves. Its only worse the further west you go, dams are empty, rivers and streams are dry for the most part and farmers are doing it tough again. Yet, the majority of farmers rarely complain as they are used to tough times and are bred tough. I was talking to an 80 year old farmers wife in Abercorn last week who lives on her own on 1200 acres and she has had to sell some yearlings because there was little feed for them and she basically sold them cheap to be able to survive. Her husband passed away a few years ago in rising flood waters whilst on his horse. They both passed away together and to see this tough old women share this story brings tears to the toughest. Yet shes as pleasant and caring as they come.
