Crowd Favourites of Yester year

I was just reflecting back on many years attending Parra games. The days of going to watch all three grades and following a player's progress through the grades were great. The toyota Cup has taken much of that away. There were many crowd favourites who never went on to big first grade careers. Some names come to mind such as Gulio Pomponio, Ted Sulkowicz (brother of Ed), Brad Williams, Steve Williams. Does anyone else have a fave lower grade player that never really cracked it.?

  • Yep, I do.
    I loved Gulio Pomponio.
But my all time fave coming through the grades was Eric Grothe Snr.
He tore up the lower grades and was a massive favourite of everyone back in those days. I saw some amazing tries from him in the Under 23's.

Seriously though werent Michael Collins and Brett Garnon both competent goal kickers
  • Eric Grothe was my fave too - I remember his tackle on a runaway Ron Coote in a reserve grade game at cumberland around 1979/80 - he nearly cut him in half! Also Phil Mann and his amazing 110m try in reserve grade v St George at kogarah - he caught a missed penalty and ran the length of the field - finally beating michael sorridimi who was jumping up and down as he approached him. From the 70s i also thought terry Scurfield (winger) was great. so many names likes Crossingham and Eddy Flahey are coming back. The White brothers from Blacktown High and the Emery brothers from Green Valley way. It is good to reflect back on the good memories and not just bemoan our current down times. Do we all miss being able to watch the 3 grades? Gotta say nothing beat the ground announcers call of - "and the try scorer is Gulioooooooo Pomponiooooooooo!!!!!!!!!"
  • Remember garry Pethybridge's long hair - see him from time to time at the winston - no flowing locks these days lol - yes it was long ago.
  • the goal kicking prop from the bush!
  • Yes. His nickname was Radar, such was his goal kicking accuracy.

Edit: I was talking about Doug Hayes.
