Wow, Cronk says on 360 that with the new GPS system players will normally work at 85m per minutes but the Storm work at a rate of 100m per minute, Origin runs at about 100m per minutes. The Roosters train 120m to 150m per minutes for 2-4-5 minutes at drills training. Pre-season they started low & they work themselves up as the season moves along. He says as the games lifts your prepared for it. He says that's when other teams fall away with fatigue. At the Storm that's the way they train so all players are ready. He says most clubs do it but it's how you train. Wow, great insight!!

  • I notice he didn't mention the disclosed $2million in TPAs.  Also it isn't just when other teams fatigue that Melbourne dominate as they dominate from the first minute.  It comes down to their attitude and commitment along with superior talent in their roster.  The training methods help but are very similar to what all teams do.

    • We'll our board should pull it's finger out and get some TPA's.

      • At arm's length of course ...

      • Blake Ferguson should of pulled his finger out.... Sorry, old joke.

  • Not sure if he is just a genetic freak but Cameron Smith never looks fatigued which must contribute to his ability to read the game and make decisions. I’d be interested to know what some of his cardio respiratory figures are like. I wonder if he has ever undergone VO2max testing?

Does anyone know much about the nrl drug testing criteria? Is stuff like testing for EPO or blood doping something that’s looked into?

This is probably a bit left field and maybe not relevant to rugby league but I’m sure if there is an advantage to be gained without being caught Melbourne would be all over it.

    • All bodies are different and as you said it could be genetic but the different body shapes also contribute.

Smith is similar to Hindmarsh and Gallen in that they don't look the part or have explosive power but go all day.  A lot of footballers now want the ripped body and big muscles but the extra muscle mass requires more fuel hence fatigue faster.

    • Stats such as run metres, tackles, etc may be more interesting in regards to Smith, hands on ball constantly making the right decisions but not really doing the tough stuff .

    • Watch Melbourne games closely and follow what Smith actually does and more often than not it is actually very little. He is possibly lucky if he goes to ground tackled with the ball maybe twice per game and is not very often the first contact made in defence - tends to be 2nd or 3rd and then commences his usual wrestling crap.

When 90% of what he does in a game is pass [usually forward] from dummy half, kick goals and be 2nd or 3rd man in on tackles post the initial contact he really shouldn't look fatigued.

Rule breaking freak - yes. Cap cheating freak - yes. Lying freak - yes. Genetic freak - not so much.

      • I wish we had someone playing for us that Freakin Smart

  • Young players ask to come to trail for the club, coaching staff soon know whether you have what it takes in pre-season. Storm will teach you skill, they can't teach you to have drive and a good attitude. He spoke a lot about the Storm, he mentioned that a good team is driven by good leaders, it starts with Bellamy, filters down to Smith, then it was Slater. Well BA may have filtered this but it would have stopped with Mannah. Great to watch!
