  • But why do all that including losing potentially your best player in Burton for Kikau & Mahoney. Burton is more important than Kikau. Like if it was Munster, Cleary, DCE i would go with it but for Mahoney and Kikau i do not see how getting rid of 4-5 players you had on long term deals to fit them in is smart, including one of your spine players. Only Mahoney sitting there by himself.

    • Tp jnr is on big money and isn't living up to the $ value

      • He hasn't been too bad, but he is looking at Bennett and the Dolphins.

    • You should make fun of my kids mate. Wrong on every level

  • Or, and stick with me here because this might seem hard to understand, Barrett "quit" (was sacked) because he was statistically the worst performing coach in the modern era and the Bulldogs don't want to come last forever.

The Dogs already have the majority of their squad off contract in 2024, the challenge for them will be that's also when the Dolphins will be looking to nab top tier talent so it's a bad time to rebuild.

What they could see already was that Barrett was not the man to oversee the rebuild, so now they have a year to figure out who is.

    • Yeah Barrett was said to have walked, but he was sacked as it says he is getting a pay out but why get paid out if you walk? i would not be surprised he signed something to keep his mouth shut over what happened and a pay out was to keep him happy.

Either way, players went there for Barrett (for some reason) and who they get next is crucial.

      • no doubt it was a negotiated exit - barrett didnt want a repeat of his manly exit and gus didn't want to sack him. Conversation would have gone something like this:

Gus: "Trent, your time is up mate, do we sack you or do you walk?"

Trent: "I get it Gus, ill walk if you pay me out?"

CFO: "What figure did you have in mind Trent?"

        Trent: "1m"

CFO: "What if we meet you halfway?"

Trent: "OK, but it needs to go to the press that i quit, wasn't sacked, if i was sacked I won't get another head coaches role, if you sack me its 1m"

CFO: "In fairness to you and the club, we'll agree on those terms, but you must sign this nda before we go the press"

Trent: "Done, i am going back to gardening, i enjoyed it last time"

        • Why would Barrett agree to 50% of his entitlement? Sacked or quit no way he'd walk for any less than his full contract wages. Why would he?

          • Agree Mutts, i also doubt Gus did not want to sack him. I think Gus would have had a hard time to considering his relationship with Barrett but he would have had final say surely. But how Rock wrote it with Gus is how i believe it went down to saying do we sack you or do you walk.

    • That's it, Captain. Gus feels (and the board agrees) the Dogs need someone else to get them out of this hole.

He's orchestrated this soft landing because he actually likes and respects Barrett, and to avoid radioactive fallout for other relationships. Griffin had a rough landing.

That's the gut feeling I get reading between the lines and putting the dots together.

Barrett will probably have a generous payout and confidentiality clauses, etc.

They've recruited attacking players and spent up big on the Fox, Duffy, TPJ, Burton, Naden (and Kikau to come) but their attack this year has regressed to embarrassing levels. 9.6ppg. Worse than last year (14.16ppg). It's their defence that has improved this year (from 29.6ppg to 22.1ppg). They've only conceded 8 more points than us (221 to 213).

They don't play badly in patches, they just find ways to lose and struggle to close out a game and stay focused, and aren't a confident team because of it.

The thing is I feel they need to also look at their spine, on-field leadership, and probably a few tougher heads to (not just Jackson). Not sure guys like Duffy, Vaughan, TPJ, and Flanagan are the answer. Reed will help a bit, provide energy and good service next year, but I don't feel he'll be enough.
