Parra will continue to have to pay overs to attract decent talent to the Club unless it starts to consistently play in the finals series.
With players like Lafai, Roberts, Hiku and now Copely on the market and realistically Parra having no hope in signing any it comes down to more than money in most cases. Players would usually prefer to play for a strong club on slightly less money than play for a struggling club.
Now Copely has expressed a desire to play for a strong club and Parra are just not that at the present. His other desire is to stay in Qld which means the Cowboys but would it be different if Parra was a strong club? I would say that he would seriously consider an offer from us if we were stronger.
We now have next year to start our run of playing in finals on a consistent basis. Anything less than a finals berth would be considered a big fail and will mean Parra will consistently miss out on decent talent coming onto the market. Next year is make or break for Parra imo.

How about Parra invests in BETTER talent scouts....that's a start
Unless Parra does that.....Parra will always pay overs for playes....we always have, even in 2015/16 - "over galore"
Yes Yes, maybe for the first time since the Hindmarsh brothers & co in the late 90's - has the "scouting" actually FOUND some young talent - but really - over the past 30+ years - Parra's scouting STINKS
For such a talent rich pool to draws from - and over many decades -Parra has "scouted" so poorly compared to other markets that have a much smaller base to draw from.....THIS HAS NOTHING to do with where Parra finishes on the ladder
Sure - winning attracts bigger stars on bigger salaries......but that is never the answer, more like icing on the cake
THE CAKE and long term success is getting (and keeping) the young talent EARLY - this is what separates the genuine WINNERS from perenial losers like Parra
Copely will be a big loss--for the Eels that is! We don`t seem to have the administrative infrastructure in place to correct the problems you have identified viz. lack of money and not being an attractive club for some class players to come to.
There will always be excuses for failures. This site proves that. Until the supporters adopt a realist philosophy, such as, if we don`t win the competition, we have failed. We will continue with the problems you highlighted.
Merry Christmas to all
Brett, Precisely my point - irrespective of where the talent is found - it must still infact BE FOUND - something our "lack of scouting" consistantly FAILS to do
TALENT SCOUTS trump local juniors by a mile
The problem at Parra is our scouting - or lack of, to be honest
You and I agree 100%
