Yes, Mark Russell’s appointment is the focal point of a wider coaching shake-up at the Parramatta Eels heading into the 2027 season.
Mark Russell has built a highly respected resume over more than a decade coaching across elite NRL pathways and high-performance systems. Known for a disciplined, defensively minded approach and exceptional player development, his coaching record is highlighted by championship success in the lower grades.
Coaching Highlights & Record
- 2025 Jersey Flegg Premiership: As Head Coach, Russell guided the Under-21 Jersey Flegg side to a dominant Minor Premiership, culminating in a Grand Final victory over Penrith. This was the Storm's first-ever U21 premiership.
- NRL Player Development: His pathways coaching has a proven track record of moving talent into first grade. In 2026 alone, eight players from his 2025 premiership-winning Jersey Flegg side made their NRL debuts for the Storm.
- Pathways Innovation: Pioneered Melbourne's "Road to AAMI Park" initiative, which created a direct passage for native Victorian players to reach elite NRL levels.
Melbourne Storm (2022–2026): Served in multiple high-profile development roles. He was appointed the inaugural Head Coach for the Storm's revamped NSW Cup side for the 2026 season and functioned as their Senior Academy Coach. He previously took over their Jersey Flegg program late in 2022.
Sydney Roosters: Spent several years within the Roosters' elite pathways and junior development networks prior to moving to Melbourne.
Head coach Jason Ryles has been progressively restructuring his support staff, resulting in a few notable shifts at both the top-tier and pathways levels:
🔄 The Assistant Coaching Switch
- Sam Moa Departed: Mark Russell is directly replacing assistant coach Sam Moa, who has departed the Eels. Moa has been heavily targeted to return to the Roosters under Trent Robinson.
- Remaining 2025/2026 Core Staff: Russell joins an established first-grade coaching team assembled by Ryles, which has included experienced figures Nathan Brown (Senior Assistant), Scott Wisemantel
📉 Lower Grade and Pathways Shake-up
Alongside Russell's arrival, the Eels completely overhauled their 2027 junior elite pathways and reserve grade coaching setups to build a more cohesive system under Ryles:
| Team / Grade | 2027 Appointed Head Coach |
|---|---|
| NSW Cup (Reserve Grade) | Jordan Rankin |
| Jersey Flegg (U21s) | Mitchell Lewis |
| SG Ball Cup (U19s) | Darren Nicholls |
| Harold Matthews Cup (U17s) | Isaac Gorman |
Ryles is heavily prioritizing defensive discipline and seamless transition from the junior system to the NRL—making the tandem of Russell's development background and these new lower-grade appointments critical to the Eels' long-term rebuild.

Why are we uploading a blog that is completely written by AI?
It will probably end up Top Blog as well.
Because its information that is not out there.....
HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE A STRAIGHT COPY of any media extract.....whats your problem LB??????
PS We aren't uploading anything, I am, I still edited it just the same.....don't like it bad luck......I also qualified it as Google information in an AI setting, do you think reading that is not informative,if so move on! and get a life somewhere else. TCT is like a newsletter! its very informative!
PS to you Analyst.....I am not aware of how a "top blog" even works, but so what if is, there's no fcuking prises that I am aware of and its not a scoop, just information that will go through to the "keeper".
Do you guys actually see some of the questions that come back from readers not having a clue, my guess is less than 50% did/does not know who Mark Russell is or than Brown is still on the coaching staff.....
Woah woah settle down. What have I said to upset you?
Its definitely out there.......
Even with a coaching duo of Gibson and Bellamy at the helm, this roster wouldn't be competitive. The talent simply isn't there.
O'Neill and Rogers should have been moved on in 2024. The state of this top 30 roster given the resources and support available at Parramatta - reflects a serious failure of recruitment and administration, bordering on negligence.
Yes, subjectively but you/we need to understand how the negligence actually occured.... that said we need to move on, there have been more articles about sacking MON and Rogers as tissue's wiping away LB's tears for feeling/ being upset over the use ofAI.
It's the correct sought of mentality the team definitely, needs across all levels.
Sounds like a club trying to find an identity too me and I have to say I like it.
I'm not aware of who Mark Russell is but if he can recreate or help recreate what Melbourne have been masters of I wish him and JR all the best.
