Bulls’ Burgess in Parra’s sights

PARRAMATTA’S audacious spending spree might not be over, with club officials setting their sights on Super League sensation Sam Burgess. The Eels have already bolstered their roster for next season by signing Timana Tahu, Justin Poore and Shane Shackleton. However, Bradford back-rower Burgess – rated by Bradford Bulls’ teammate Steve Menzies as potentially the best forward in the world – is their latest target. Burgess, contracted to Bradford until the end of 2010, aspires to test himself in the NRL. His manager, Chris Caisley, revealed the Bulls would consider releasing him next season if a player swap could be arranged. ‘‘He’s definitely a player of interest for us,’’ confirmed Eels chief executive Paul Osborne. ‘‘He’s someone we’re looking at but we’re pretty tight with the [salary] cap.’ http://www.smh.com.au/news/lhqnews/burgess-in-parras-sights/2009/08/01/1248977235992.html

  • isnt that the guy that put that big hit on fui in a test New Zealand vs England
    • Sure is!

      • Here's another

  • OK, that makes sense. A player swap is the perfect way for us to release somebody and try someone new. Would it be Ben Smith?

I haven't heard anything about Sam Burgess. Maybe it's worth a look on youtube. You've got to wonder about the logic behind trying a player from the ESL. Most of the time it doesn't work. Ellis came to Australia with huge expectations but hasn't seemed to do too much for the Tigers. It will be an interesting experiment if it works.
  • The scary thing is he was only 18 when he put that shot on Fui.

You know the guy has talent when he's playing in the backrow for Great Britain at 18, and he is still only 20 now, so he is still atleast another 5-6 years off his peak as a forward, if not longer.. I really think he would be a star in NRL, he has aggression and technique, and he will only get better when he's playing in the best competition in the world..

Steve Menzies has been around long enough to notice a good player and if Beaver rates him, then that's a pretty solid recomendation.. In regards to Gareth Ellis, if you ask any tigers fan they have been really impressed by him and hold him up there with their best players this season, they really value his work ethic and skill.
  • I would swap Ben Smith for him because their value is roughly the same.
    • Ben Smith, Roughly the same as Sam Burgess Bwahahahahaahahaaaaaa!!!

  • would be good to have a englishmen with some mongrel in the team i mean look at the impact garith ellis is having on the tigers
  • I thought he was a prop
  • mate i would take big sam in an instant!
