BIRD a free man & open to offers

Just heard that Greg BIRD is now a free man after having his conviction quashed today by the court. He is now entitled to employment in the nrl and would attract some offers for sure. The guy can play the game. Parramatta have no $$$$ left but a team like the warriors or newcastle might. He would not be the type of player that DA would be looking at anyway.Never been a fan although he is far more talented than Paul Gallen and look where he is now - Australian Rep.

  • The news sickened me when I first heard Bird had 'glassed" his girlfriend. Any so called "man" that has to resort to violence against women is beyond pathetic, especially a 100Kg muscle bound athlete that is delivering the blows to the face with a glass of all things !!!

But, sadly, League is no different to society, there are selfless "good guys" that give to the community, people like our Jack Gibson and his enourmous crusade about schizophrenia aweness, and Nathan Hindmarsh who just recieved that community award and many other players that "give" time to sick kids in hospital and many many more that we nevre even hear about..........BUT like society, there are also the bad guys too. The Wendall Sailors' (cocaine abuse) The Greg Inglis' (girlfriend beater) The Matty Johns (Adulterer and well you know the rest.....) The Birds' (malicious Violence aginst women) as well as many others....

But, as fans and members of society, we must accept the justice systems rulings as well as any punishments dealt out by the NRL. Simply put, like ALL other parts of society, when you've done the crime & done the time.......then it's up to the individual to seek redemption, not the '"old lynch mob mentality" from yesteryear

Just like in the case of Wendall Sailor's cocaine abuse - discgraced and ARU contract destroyed, Wendall had to do his time and thankfully was allowed a second chance , a chance at redemption from Rugby League.

Wendall's contribution to St George's 2009 season cannot be underestimated - and as a human being (not just a parra fan) I am glad for Wendall's sake that that redemption was sought and EARNED on and off the football field. He can now enjoy retirement without the dark shadow of failure following him.....that IMO would only lead to more drug use

Even with Tim Smith and his well documented alchol problems - redemption is being sought at Wigan and maybe one day back in the NRL

I agree, Sailor and Smith are "self harm" issues where Inglis, Johns and now Bird's pathetic acts against women abhore me to my core........as sickening as those acts are, a society that does not allow a framework for second chances is far far worse.

The facts are, these bad boys are League players and redemption can only be achieved on the football field and behind closed doors. Bird will have to hear the fans jibes & Boo's (and fair enough too) - but if Bird is ever going to reform, part of the healing process has to do with maintaining his identity - without that identity (League player) only more problems and battered women will follow I'm afraid to say.

So, Bird should be allowed a second chance and he should be jeered by fans upon his return. But he should also be cheered for playing good footy as well.

I write this piece with real mixed feelings, I know most of you will disagree with me, but Bird (when in top form) reminded me of Wally Lewis - tough like a second rower with the silky skills of 5/8th in the 80's - a true rare Bird (if you will) that has a tremendous footy IQ - a great instictive player and rare match winner.

Any club that lands Bird, will have landed a generational superstar..........time will tell of couse tell, but that is just my opinion

A real Jeckle & Hyde dilema - but who are we not to allow a fellow human a second chance at redemption, I know that over the years I have had the odd black mark stamped on my Angel Card too - how bout you ????
    • At least with Del & Tim Smith, their errs were in their own time. One player that you omitted is Andrew Johns who admitted to taking drugs while he was playing but still ,for some reason, is put on a pedistal & still goes UNPUNISHED.
As far as the Bird topic, I completely agree there is no excuse for violence against women.
      • Thank you for your reply Clintoris My thoughts on Andrew Johns are that he stood up and admitted his use of the drug Ecstasy. At the time Johns was the darling of Rugby League – but still had the courage to bare all in his one on one with Gus Gould. I remember being saddend at the time to discover that John had suffered (for many years) with Depression. Here is a classic example of redemption – One of the greatest players to ever lace a boot. I for one was glad the Andrew Johns drama was dealt with in the manner it was and am glad that Johns is still in League passing on his valuable skills to half backs and five eights around the NRL.

What a waste that would be if further punishment was given for just taking recreational drugs and causing self harm
        • He only admitted to it cause he got caught!!!! end of story!!!
    • he was innocent anyways
    • Thank you for your reply Warren Scott – but I respectfully disagree, I don’t think throwing people on the scrap heap, or by not offering second or third chances is the kind of society that I would like to live in. While I don’t agree with his behavior, I do however believe that having to cope with the shame & embarrassment of his actions in conjunction with Rugby League’s positive role models like Bennet, Sheen, Cameron Smith, Nathan Hindmarsh etc - Bird can attempt to re-build his identity. Because, IF Bird does indeed have a problem with alcohol and violence – removing his identity (He IS a footy player in his mind) – then chances of Bird turning to booze and violence (again) is only increased
  • What about the 6000 lies he told?.....isn't their something called contempt of court ?.....his sheila must have made them up to.....Ossie should sign up birds lawyer .......
