But, sadly, League is no different to society, there are selfless "good guys" that give to the community, people like our Jack Gibson and his enourmous crusade about schizophrenia aweness, and Nathan Hindmarsh who just recieved that community award and many other players that "give" time to sick kids in hospital and many many more that we nevre even hear about..........BUT like society, there are also the bad guys too. The Wendall Sailors' (cocaine abuse) The Greg Inglis' (girlfriend beater) The Matty Johns (Adulterer and well you know the rest.....) The Birds' (malicious Violence aginst women) as well as many others....
But, as fans and members of society, we must accept the justice systems rulings as well as any punishments dealt out by the NRL. Simply put, like ALL other parts of society, when you've done the crime & done the time.......then it's up to the individual to seek redemption, not the '"old lynch mob mentality" from yesteryear
Just like in the case of Wendall Sailor's cocaine abuse - discgraced and ARU contract destroyed, Wendall had to do his time and thankfully was allowed a second chance , a chance at redemption from Rugby League.
Wendall's contribution to St George's 2009 season cannot be underestimated - and as a human being (not just a parra fan) I am glad for Wendall's sake that that redemption was sought and EARNED on and off the football field. He can now enjoy retirement without the dark shadow of failure following him.....that IMO would only lead to more drug use
Even with Tim Smith and his well documented alchol problems - redemption is being sought at Wigan and maybe one day back in the NRL
I agree, Sailor and Smith are "self harm" issues where Inglis, Johns and now Bird's pathetic acts against women abhore me to my core........as sickening as those acts are, a society that does not allow a framework for second chances is far far worse.
The facts are, these bad boys are League players and redemption can only be achieved on the football field and behind closed doors. Bird will have to hear the fans jibes & Boo's (and fair enough too) - but if Bird is ever going to reform, part of the healing process has to do with maintaining his identity - without that identity (League player) only more problems and battered women will follow I'm afraid to say.
So, Bird should be allowed a second chance and he should be jeered by fans upon his return. But he should also be cheered for playing good footy as well.
I write this piece with real mixed feelings, I know most of you will disagree with me, but Bird (when in top form) reminded me of Wally Lewis - tough like a second rower with the silky skills of 5/8th in the 80's - a true rare Bird (if you will) that has a tremendous footy IQ - a great instictive player and rare match winner.
Any club that lands Bird, will have landed a generational superstar..........time will tell of couse tell, but that is just my opinion
A real Jeckle & Hyde dilema - but who are we not to allow a fellow human a second chance at redemption, I know that over the years I have had the odd black mark stamped on my Angel Card too - how bout you ????
As far as the Bird topic, I completely agree there is no excuse for violence against women.
What a waste that would be if further punishment was given for just taking recreational drugs and causing self harm
