He doesn’t officially start until next year, but Trent Barrett took the opportunity to cast his eye over his first Parramatta training session on Tuesday.

Barrett, who will be Brad Arthur’s assistant coach from 2023, was a surprise visitor when the blue and golds were on the training paddock at Kellyville Park. The former Manly and Canterbury coach made an impromptu appearance as the team went through its paces and then shared his observations with spine players Mitchell Moses, Dylan Brown, Clint Gutherson and Reed Mahoney.

While he wasn’t present in an official capacity, it was a chance for the quartet and the coaching staff to pick Barrett’s brain just two weeks out from the finals.

“He popped by and said hello,” said Eels forward Shaun Lane. “He didn’t stand in for training too much and get involved, he was just scouting out the place and sussing everything out.

“Everyone had a chat to him and said hello. I saw him after training having a few words with the halves and Reedy and Gutho. That’s going to be the main reason why Parra have got him on board, to use his skills and knowledge over the career that he had, obviously he was a great player and worked with some good halves himself over at Penrith.

“It would be good to see what goes on there next year.”

Barrett will be charged with overseeing the Eels attack, a role he has previously held at the Panthers, where he was praised for helping to develop Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai into superstars. Lane played under Barrett during his stint at the Sea Eagles and believes his experience as a coach and player will benefit the group.

“If you look at his resume, what he’s been able to do as a player, he has skills and knowledge there to be able to perform at the best level,” Lane said.

“He’s a great guy, never had any issues with him as a coach. He’s easy to get along with, he’ll fit in with the culture we have at Parramatta pretty well.”

The Eels have a chance to finish the regular season as high as fourth if they win their remaining two games and other results fall their way. Their immediate focus will be overcoming a Brisbane side that beat them 34-14 only a month ago.

“We’re not worried about finals at the moment, we’re worried about making sure we back up our start from last week,” Arthur said.

“We’ve shown what we can do but we need to move past a team that can do this and can do that when they want to; we need to be the team that wants to do it all the time. If we show that want and desire and it’s not good enough, I can live with that.

“[The players] have stood up and taken real ownership and accountability about how they turn up. It’s got nothing to do with the staff, it’s their want and attitude towards it.

“They showed that on the weekend [against Canterbury], they need to want to have that feeling of playing well, defending well on their tryline, turning up for each other. That needs to be important to them.”

  • He will have us playing like the dogs in no time....argh :-(

    • Or Manly and Maybe Penrith. Maybe play like the Dogs first 20 then Manly 2nd twenty and then Penrith last 40

  • Happy to hear that he took time out to drop into training. It shows his keen, I hope he does ok otherwise get Browny to slap him around a bit.

  • Any pics of him being there

  • Barrett is an A grade dope and as dumb as a box of hammers.  Our attack is pathetic enough without the NRLs worst attacking NRL coach ever putting his mits all over us.  Barrett , Mary and Brown are tne biggest group of rejects I reckon I've ever seen on one coaching lineup in all my years watching this game.
