Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has hailed Blaize Talagi’s toughness after handing the local junior the No.6 jersey for the Easter Monday clash against Wests Tigers.

Talagi made an eye-catching debut in the centres against Manly on Sunday, but will join Dylan Brown in the halves against the Tigers after the Eels lost halfback Mitchell Moses to a foot injury for the next couple of months.

Awaiting Talagi will be his former Westfields Sports High classmate and fellow NRL rookie Lachie Galvin, who impressed for the Tigers in their win over Cronulla. Arthur had Daejarn Asi or rookie Ethan Sanders as options but had no qualms about sticking with Talagi, who played No.6 as a junior.

“He’s a kid learning his trade, he’ll get things wrong, but he’ll move on and keep going with the game, and that’s what I like about him,” Arthur told this masthead.

“I also love the fact he’s just tough – Blaize has plenty of good attributes, but for me it’s his toughness and not letting things get to him.

A Natural Position

“He also played all his junior reps at five-eighth, and it was only last year we played him in the centres and at fullback to have a look."

"When I spoke to him today about being at No.6, he was excited and couldn’t get the smile off his face.”

Talagi, like Galvin, is tall and powerful, and got the nod to be the Australian Schoolboys’ five-eighth in 2022 ahead of Queensland sensation and South Sydney flyer Jye Gray.

Moses underwent surgery on a foot injury suffered in an innocuous tackle involving Luke Brooks with just over 10 minutes remaining in the loss to the Sea Eagles. It is not the first time he has continued playing with a major injury. Moses pushed through the pain of a busted cheekbone against Brisbane last year, and a broken back when he made his debut for NSW in Origin III in 2021.

“I knew there was something wrong with him during the game."

"I spoke to him afterwards, he just looked at me, shook his head, then put his foot in an ice bucket; people probably get sick of me saying it, but they don’t realise how tough Mitch is,” Arthur said.

The Carty Party's Pain Management

Moses’ heroics were topped only by those of Bryce Cartwright, who suffered a rib injury in the opening exchanges.

“He could be out one week, he could be out four, but he’s also every chance of playing on Monday,” Arthur said of Cartwright.

“He’d had rib issues before. It’s now a case of how much pain he can tolerate.“

He got needled the other day at half-time and told me he’ll see how much longer he can keep going, and gave as much as he could. He lasted 52 minutes. If he asks me to give him every opportunity to play this week, I’ll give him until Sunday because he’s earned that right.”

  • Well if he didn't despite naming him, we are in big trouble.

  • That's all very sterling British stuff from Arthur and Cartwright but the fact is that Cartwright has a broken rib and we have capable replacements.

It would be a very poor and immature decision to let him play. Sometimes the adults have to make the decisions for the children.

    • Reports i have seen says it is not fractured.

      • Well it's really semantics, he IS injured so why are they even contemplating playing him ?

        • There is nothing from the club that I have seen that says he is out. Would you believe the media? If you have inside info then that's fine.

        • Thank you for clarifying he wont be playing when i didn't even say he would be. Plus they are not my reports also. Plus most outlets are reporting the severity of the ribs are not classified, these ones are new compared to the ones stating a fracture. Also, clean break have you seen Carty's scan have you personally? Even BA did not mention a fracture. It could be but we don't know.

Added, i doubt they would even risk him with a fractured rib at all. But it seems Carty decides if he plays or not. If it is fractured then i will admit i am wrong, just going off what i have read at other outlets.

          • Fair enough LB, stick it up them....I cannot imagine that Avenger has seen the X Rays unless he is very close to Carty...... and for someone that close , I am sure Carty would not appreciate the report to social media ahead of what ever Carty wants to release......

and Hugo sometimes the adults have to make decisions for the children...... what qualifies you as an adult in these circumstances? your dad would be spinning with some of the shit you have come out with lately!

            • The reality is a lot of NRL players often play through niggles and pain. Kudos to Cartwright for showing character & toughness regardless if he ends up playing or not.

The same goes for Moses. Arthur said he knew something was wrong with him at half-time, but Moses shrugged it off and wanted to play. That means he probably played the bulk of R3 with a fractured foot. Holy Moses.

Man, I have nothing but respect for that. Respect to Carty and Moses for the passion and courage they have shown. It's not the first time Moses has done something like that.

Note: The G-force of each collision on average exceeds 20-25G's. The majority of collisions. Probably a far higher G-force, actually. It's just when the NRL tested it five years ago (after the Folkes CTE stuff) inj a semi-professional game involving the Knights their instruments could only test up to those G-force levels. Probably, better not to know the real force. That sees hundreds of small car crashes that get increasingly more powerful over time (ask guys like Trevor Gilmeister). In comparison, Mike Tyson hit at 9G in his prime, and say 5-9Gs in a fighter jet can render an average, healthy person unconscious.

            • I'll just say that Avenger has some really close sources to the club, and not sure that saying things like he hasn't seen the X-rays is smart. Think he may be on the money more than any of the so called rumour mongers we hear from.

              • Well i did say unless he is very close but the way he said it to LB it was as if he should have known....finally if I was Carty's close friend or confidante of someone else who was, I would not be impressed being used as a scoop!...... Avenger could have said for example....."I have heard that it is a ckean break" and left it at that.
