What makes you think we missed signing him? Just because the media link us to every off contract player doesn't mean we are actively pursuing them. Even if we did meet with the player, that doesn't mean the club had decided that's the player they want. That's how interviews work.
We don't know the internal dialogue within the club. I'm confident they know the type of players they are looking for, and will only land the players that fit that mould. You don't build a team by buying individuals - that just gets you an incoherent bunch of players.
Well put Finny and spot on.
I'd say we are linked because much like 6 there glaring holes on the roster.
TDS Sandon Smith and alike are prime candidates to fill them.
The fact that JR has talked to TDS Blaise Talagi Galvin and alike confirms the interest. If we aren't linked then what's the point in JR meeting him I mean it's what it is.
While I agree not all the media say is correct when your HC is interviewing the mentioned we were interested.
Can I suggest Longy that what you say at the end is so so true. "You don't build a team by buying individuals - that just gets you an incoherent bunch of players".
The club has been unable to sign players that they have identified first up as fitting their style, players wanted for their pace and skill in demand players that are converted by other clubs, players that compliment and fit into Ryles vision. These players are the ones we are missing out on. The direct result - we are left purchasing individuals that can fill a hole for a while, or that posess potential unrealised. This surely cannot be good for a team attempting to be better then most.
I wonder if it was put to TDS that it would be a time share with Ryley smith and not a certain starter ? We don't really know what goes down in the meetings but if manly has given him the starting role with no push back that's probably what he's looking for. Eels looking for someone to work with Ryley and compliment him not take the lion share of minutes off him
The difference is that Ryles is searching for players that can play a particular role when called into the team. We have seen that build throughout the year, especially last week with 2 back-up halves being called into the NRL team to play their role, and getting good results.
That's not to say we don't need players with pace and skill, of course we do. They should be the regular NRL players, who set the benchmark for the position they play in so that all back-up players can aspire to play to a similar role (with the obvious less skil/speed etc). I can see that Ryles is building a club for sustainable success. We haven't seen this at Parra for a long time, probably ever. This is going to take time, but if fans are expecting an instant win with a team full of rep stars next season, they are going to be sorely dissapointed because that's not the way the club is building.
The only ones linking TDS with Parra were the media.
We definitely had a crack at him but mostly linked to us due to cap space really, we aren't desperate for a 9 yet.
So you are saying we weren't really interested? I mean you do have more insight than us into the club Super.
Super isnt that the way fans in the main, get 99.9%of their information, insight and knowledge.Professional mainstream Reporters are paid very well to possess informants, sources and club types with information. They make the phone calls and do the leg work to obtain that information and pass it onto fans.
Where else would the linking be discussed in public other then the media.Im not sure it should be dismissed out of hand because "it's only the media making the link"
It is becomming louder - that the club may have to address their shortcoming in signing in demand talent sooner rather then later, instead of attempting to gloss over whom they have targeted and hide the fact they missed out on another player.
The time is getter nearer where the club need to become transparent on whom they have targeted and lost. Clear the air, investigate their mistakes on why it's happening with regularity and be up front. Show they are working on remedying the problem. This way an open and transparent leadership of our member based Eels club can be embraced and systems and processes "negotiating, closing, list management, scouting" can be improved. We all want the same thing, a winning team.
