AFL Invading NRL Heartland

The AFL is beginning to make small in roads into the NRL heartland of Western Sydney. The AFL are running coaching clincis for young kids and getting them involved in the code from an early age. As part of a subject at school last year I participated in an AFL coaching clinic and I just received free tickets to 1 of the GWS matches this year. I have also been given free membership to their Junior Fan Club. The NRL needs to start running more school programs and getting kids involved in rugby league early on. In the birthplace of Rugby League the AFL is beginning to make a mark and this has to be responded to by the NRL. I consider the NRL as the toughest competiton in the world but the AFL is slowly gaining popularity and they are attacking our most valuable asset: The Kids. Parramatta and Penrith are the 2 biggest nurseries for Rugby League in Australia but the AFL is starting to attract more and more kids. I would love to see the NRL running coaching clinics in my school and seeing them hand out free tickets to games and further boosting the popularity of Rugby League in Western Sydney. There is only 1 thing that will definitely kill off the AFL challenge and that is a Parramatta Premiership. If we win the comp interest in League will sky-rocket and the AFL will lose a lot of support. Hopefully the NRL responds to the AFL's challenge and squashes it.

  • It will be years before the GWS AFL side even gets close to the magnitude of juniors that the areas in Penrith and Parramatta have - and I literally mean, years.

The NRL's taking the necessary steps to stamp out future domination in the Westen Sydney region of the AFL, but even then, the likelihood of that is minimal to say the least.

  • My kid's primary school did a movie night to raise money for the Year Six end-of-year trip. So there was an entire cinema filled with children in the Rouse Hill area waiting to watch Kung Fu Panda, and what ad gets shown. An AFL clinic ad - which actually seemed to be an NAB ad. Now that may be a national NAB/AFL ad running everywhere, but if it was targetted, they sure got their targeting right. Most kids make their sporting decisions in primary school, you do have to get to them that early. And I totally agree with Muttman, get the players out to schools - its best, most simple marketing.
  • the afl have been doing this for years i remeber when i was in primary school 10 years ago theyd have coaching clinics come out every month at least and this was on magpies turf
  • the dumbest thing i can see them facing is the swans support will die in the ass most fans live out this way and they will way up travelling to see gws or taking that assy trek to moore park and spending 6 years in traffic
  • What I've never actually understood about all this, and following on from my previous post in this thread - is that the GWS side see themselves a legitimate threat to not only the NRL sides in the Western Sydney region, but also to the Sydney Swans themselves - as evidenced by their desire to play home games out of ANZ Stadium.

This in spite of the fact that they had a custom made AFL venue made for them at the Blacktown Olympic Centre in Rooty Hill, which I live about 10 minutes walk from.
From what I've seen, and heard - long-term, perhaps they have a future, but in the short-term, there will be no dividends for them, and I very rarely see any real AFL action happening at the Blacktown venue, at least in the times that I have been there.
  • My son went to that 2 weeks ago, and the NRL should be alerted.
They were very smart to hold it on a weekend with no league that weekend.
Around 400-500 kids showed up, and I'll say most had a ball.

My son is enjoying AFL more and more and rugby league never worried about the team he use to play in.
Whereas with his Auskick he has giants players as his coaches.
I've been very impressed from the AFL and the effort they put into making sure the young kids have fun.
  • Ricky I'm there every other weekend, and for their first season in any competition they're doing a superb job.
Decent turnouts every game, good interaction with players.

The NRL will be looking over their shoulder slot quicker than most think.
I'm a die hard Eel, but my kids are loving AFL at the moment and he's so happy doing it.
  • I love AFL too Shane - don't get me wrong.
I just think some of their expectations, are a bit too early to have.

As has been raised above however, it's all about money, and how much is willing to be spent by those in charge on their respective sports.
  • When I was in year 7 I did AFL for sport for an entire term. We were given free merchandise and told where we could register. I have never seen a RL player at my school it has either been AFL or soccer. Last year I was involved in an AFL coaching clinic and were given AFL coaching accreditation and we had to teach primary school kids about AFL. The best part was when 1 of the kids told me that AFL was a girl's sport and that RL was a real sport. The NRL does need to begin interacting with the kids in the local area and show the kids that RL is the best sport.

"Well he was offered a path at least, maybe not in the position he wanted but guarenteed FG week in week out. Penrith there was never certainty of starting straight away.
Not sure who offered more in financials though. "

I cannot answer for EA, but if there is a kid to play 6 now the closest bet would be Papali'i or Volkman. In future Twidle or Talataina could be the future.

"Agreed. But that has to begin at an organisational level, not just the football department.
