Secondly am I the only person who doesn't think Mortimer is a half-back? Tbh he hasn't really shown me anything to indicate to me that he is a 7. Mortimers strengths is his running, supporting and long kicking game. To me he hasn't showed that he is a quality organiser, passer or attacking kicker, typical traits of a 7.
I would have KK 7 and Morts outside of him. Robson done himself proud this season but he is and only ever will be a back up half. Perhaps if he was younger then there may be time for us to develop him for a first grade future, but the bloke is 27 realistically he should be in his prime already. He has enough experience now that we know if either KK or Morts goes down next season that we have a capable replacement.
on for that other thread i didnt see it because on my computer its saying it was made after mine. and if so it doesnt matter do you know how many blogs there are giving shit to mateo the ref and other crap. at least my blog is positive lol
inu wont go btw daniel ando has a big job ahead in the off season.
Mortimer at this stage in his career (i'm not saying he can't develop into one) is not a ball player. Let me ask you how many times did you see him put someone through a hole this year? How many cut out passes did he throw?
I like Mortimer he is a very enthusiastic tough young player, but to me the player he most reminds me of is Terry Lamb who was a five-eigth. Lambs strengths were his support play, running up the middle of the ruck and Lamb was a good leader, all three traits I see in Mortimer.
Mate if Ando was going to play Mortimer at 7 next season, then he would have experimented with him there this season, imo he would have been lost without Robson steering the team along.
And in rebuttle to your comments regarding Sterling and Morts family saying he is a 7, Joey Johns (who has worked weekly with the halves at Parra) thinks that he is and will remain a five-eigth.
Mark Geyer thinks that Mortimer should be half-back for NSW next season, doesn't that just tell you everything?
Here is - Food for thought
If KK & Morts are halfs. How do you think they will go defensively? Especially when the opposition starts directing heavy traffic at them. They are both small. Do you think they would handle the workload, whilst still having the ability to be creative in attack?
Both players are outstanding. I am not questioning there abilities. Just concerned with playing to small guys in halfs.
Just a question.
I believe it should be Morts/Mateo
In regards to defense, I definetely understand what your saying but tbh just about every team in the comp has smaller weak links in defense. I think we are very lucky because our two "smaller weak links" in KK and Mortimer are both gun defenders. At the start of the year when KK was playing tbh I don't really remember him costing us a try in defense at all (feel free to tell me one) and Morts has been equally as impressive every week teams have thrown props at him all day yet he continues to cut them down. In all his games in 1st grade I could recall only twice where he made a poor read and cost us a try, the first try in the Newcastle game and the one in the GF.
If over the next year the two continued to be found out in defense, then i'm sure that DA can mix up the defensive line so that the two would become harder to target. But honeslty it doesn't worry me.
What does worry me a tad however is our spine for next season, although there is a wealth of talent in it you can't make up for age and experience.
1. Hayne - 21
6. Mortimer - 20
7. KK -21
9. MK- 23 (and is only going into his third year of 1sts)
14. Mitchell - 20 (presumably)
What makes me more confident in this is that the majority of these guys have played alot of junior footy together and know each other well, and with an experienced pack of level headed forwards i'm sure it will all balance out.
I will say that even as a six, Mortimer will play more of a traditional 7 role than a six role. We've got two blokes who fit your image of the modern-day five-eighth - except they play halfback and lock in Hayne and Mateo. So I think we'll play a lot of football with Keating on one side of the ruck and Mortimer on the other, with probably Keating forming a combination with Mateo and Mortimer with Hayne.
Keating's greatest strength is his ability to penetrate up the middle of the ruck. Again, and I'll say this a thousand times. If you don't think Kris is a halfback go and watch the first Bulldogs game, where he made two line breaks in the first half, with absolutely nothing doing, straight through the guts of the opposition. Mortimer needs that little bit more space, IMO so that he can hit the ball at pace. Both lack a little in the playmaking area but are already probably the best two supporting halves in the competition.
Whatever, the case I seriously can't wait to get the two of them together.
