Why the Eels won't make the 8

There are plenty of people on this forum who believe with the signings we made this year that the Eels will make the top 8, in particular Kieran Foran, Beau Scott and Clint Gutherson will change our fortunes, unfortunately they won't be enough to make us a top 8 team. It's not that we are a bad team we are quite good we have an amazing backrow , great set of halves and the best winger in the competition but that won't be enough to break out finals drought. Teams around us have gotten better to and it seems we just miss out. Cowboys, Broncos, Sharks, Storm, Bulldogs, Warriors, Rabbitohs seem locks to make this year and we will be battling Raiders , Manly, Dragons and Penrith for the last finals spot and it's fair to say that those teams mentioned above all are a little better then us besides Dragons , so we are up against. Unless Hayne somehow returns I don't see us making finals, I am not being sour grapes or being trying to be negative and I hope I am proved wrong but other teams are still better then us.

  • How many finals did we make when Hayne was here before?I really think the Eels are a dark horse and you cant really predict how we'll go .if some of our young guns hit their stride and some of the guys who should have been better come good add in our new recruits then who knows.once they start to believe in their own success anything can happen. I just think its been so long since anything has that we are all so sceptical.
  • I think next season will be the toughest most competitive season ever!  The top eight haven't gone backwards squad wise and then you got Manly, Warriors, Parra and to a lesser degree Canberra significantly improving their squads.  It is hard to say whether we will make the eight at this stage but by Round 4 we will have a pretty good idea how strong we are.

The difficult thing is to work out whether the new stop clock rules and reduced interchange are going to negatively affect the big forward packs.  If it does then we could go from a fringe top 8 to top 4 as we don't have a big pack compared to others.

  • Some fair points jackpot, but i think we have a good pack, we seem to have things sorted in the halves for the moment if you rate foz and corey and we have a competitive backline, im expecting 6-8 position.

  • Imo on paper all that is required is cohesion in key positions to at least make finals ! Got to be impressed with signings for next season with depth for once ! In the back of our minds we all know this team will be superior to last year's one that had a real crack at the benchmarks ! Soo looking forward to 2016 season to get back some fan relief ! Go PARRA
  • I hope we get Hayne back, can't sleep until we do.
We will just need to sell half our team including Foran to get him.
Fair enough I say. We just haven't been the same successful team since he left.
We will get Hayne and just assemble the Woolgoolga Seahorses reserve grade team around him. Premiership right there.
    • Will yah forget about Hayne. He's not coming back, simple as that. why would he want come back to NRL when he can earn big buck$ in NFL? he has his own clothing in the US and it's doing well. Nah he'll stay at NFL until he's 34 and come back to play one year in NRL and it will be with Parra...did I tell you that I'm from the future? Roughly about five minutes ahead of you?

    • FEE we only won 2 things when we had Hayne, 2 wooden spoons in a row, and our team was only just better than Woolgoolga Seahorses.

  • I'm judging our chances based on last year. With such a significant roster improvement on a team that led in almost every second half during the season, it will only take a small (albeit significant) improvement for Parra to make the finals. im feeling confident.
  • If this season is anything to go by, we'll make the 8 easily
  • The fact is weve been on the cusp of the 8 for a few years now, with the players weve bought it should be enough to convert a few close losses that would have been the difference in the last few seasons.

Its certainly not being a unicorn to expect us to make the 8, we have a competitive core group now, theres no more excusses for us and i believe we have a team that can beat anybody on our day, its looking promising.

We might not make the 8, i wont be too surprised if we dont, after all we are who we are im sorry to say, lets hope we can change who we are and how we are seen next year.
