Where is our game headed.

Apparently those new kick off rules being trialed again this week and eels dragons is one of the games used for it. Also talk of a wild card round similar to American sports for teams 7-10 to fight for top 8 spots. Not sure why PVL continues to mess with the game but it's moving away from what it used to be.

  • As I've stated before its not the game i grew up with. The Rugba league man is completely stuffing our game. Heard sharks player Camern McInnis slamming all the rulechanges six agains and this latest bullshit

    • It's losing a lot of its grit and fabric that made it so great. Now it's closer to a game of touch footy with some tackling but don't hit them too hard. PVL trying to make it a world wide sport but it probably won't succeed at that level

      • Agree

      • Its to a point where i only watch parra games, use to watch about 4 games a week now maybe 1 or 0.

  • These reason PVL is doing it is twofold. One, he won't admit the 6 again rule is creating momentum swings too much so adds this to counter it without eliminating it.
Secondly, PVL has a hard on for US sport where NFL scorer kicks off, as with the idiotic conference idea is coming from, added is he feels the game needs to be different needs entertainment constantly

I am telling you now, a big hope from this for PVL is the team forced to kick, goes short most of the time. Therefore creating in his eyes entertainment.

Players are rejecting it in droves, which is great to see.

    • I think he's also looking at the collisions from the kick offs & hoping more short kick offs will eliminate that, he's been trying to minimise collisions from drop outs with new rules in the last couple years

Whether this is due to litigation factors (heavy collisions / head knocks) or just trying to make everything a contest for entertainment purposes, I'm not sure

  • PVL is also floating the idea to bring back the Amco cup.

  • Everyone saying it changes the fabric of game, what era game are you talking about?

The unlimited tackles, 4 tackles or 6 tackles sets, the 4 reserves bench, 4 man interchange  or current 6 man interchange bench.  Is it the limited interchanges or unlimited interchange?  How about the 5m or 10m defensive line?  I personally liked when markers could rake at the ball era and when fights were allowed.

The game has constantly evolved over the years as have the athletes.  I think the kick off rule is minor compared to most of changes listed above and something that should have changed years ago as most major sports around the world share possession after points are scored.  There is no longer a genuine chance for teams to steal the ball in scrums or by raking at the ball in the play the ball so giving the opposition the ball seems reasonable.  The 6 again rule won't go anywhere so if the kick off rule can be used to ensure teams aren't disadvantaged without the ball for 10mins so be it.

    • Ahh Midg the good old days . But in reality i can't disagree with your points. In saying that its just getting harder to watch the game now with the continual rule changes.

  • It was interesting to note in last weeks trial, the team receiving the ball after kickoff lost it on the first play on three occasions, so this kind of nullified the whole "let's get the ball to change momentum" idea.

The reality is that the game is unpredictable.

And also, that game resulted in a blowout score. The team that kicked off or received made no difference.
