We have now completed 6 rounds of a long season and Parramatta is not sitting in a position that most fans would like us to be in. Obviously it's not the position that the club would like us to be in. As an armchair critic, my opinion is no different to the opinion of anyone else here. It's an opinion. I'd like to put forward what I consider to be an assessment of our year thus far.A) Valid reasons for our table position.* Player availability - injuries, suspension, NRL clearance. We have not had our full roster available and it's been significant. Every club experiences this, but ours have been damaging and club wide. An indicator of the depth of this problem is that outside of the NRL team, Wenty has used nearly 30 different players already! These are the kind of numbers you see in a full season, not 6 rounds. Invariably, the clubs that have their full roster available for extended periods are the clubs to have successful seasons.* the draw - the luck of the draw can be the difference between making the 8 or not. Do you get to play teams when they are weakened by injury, suspension or Origin? Do you play certain teams twice? For us we were beaten by a near full strength Dogs in a game where our injury toll unfolded before our eyes.* The bloke in the middle - we have been on the wrong end of some howlers this year. Game momentum has been decided by referees and it can't be ignored. I can accept penalties conceded, but there have been way too many inconsistencies in the same game where Parramatta do not receive decisions that they should. This has been explored endlessly here, so I'll use a comment I heard at the Titan's game as a guide. "We got a good run from the refs today". We are overjoyed to get a fair shake. We rarely seem to be as advantaged as others.B) No Excuses* Substandard Effort - the Titans game was atrocious. This was the game that I avoided blogging on. I won't even accept a favourite player's (Gower) comment that we switched off for moments of 3 or 4 minutes at times during the game. No you didn't. The energy was so poor that anyone at the ground could tell in the first 5 minutes that there was a problem.* Playing without Possession - I'll take out the referees impact on this and I can still say that there are times when I think that we must enjoy tackling - because we hand the ball back so often.Game by GameManly - great performance that highlighted everything I saw in the preseason trainingBulldogs - real gutsy effort in the face of refereeing and injury obstacles. The score did not reflect the game.Warriors - injury impacted but still a head scratching first half. A second half, in a match away from home, that gave some positivity about an improved will to compete.Souths - superb in every respect. Great night to be a fan at the gameTigers - poor energy from both teams that had me wondering about the surface. In spite of the lack lustre game, the refereeing decisions ultimately made a difference. The Tigers were just as lifeless for much of the game but they got the decisions and the points.Titans - as analysed alreadySo after all of this exploration of the facts, how do I view the season so far? How can it be improved? The obvious is that players are and will be returning. Results will improve from this.Secondly, retention of possession. There is no shortage of work on this at training this year. People who have watched the extras at training will attest to the big name players practising simple catch and pass work at the conclusion of training. Finally, consistent effort. having a dig when you put on the jersey is non- negotiable. The season is still young. We don't want repeats of the Titans game, because to quote Danny Wicks "the fans don't deserve it." However, the team has shown the ability to match the best team (Souths) and the roster will be greatly improved very soon by the return of important players. Let's judge by years end, not by an injury impacted 6 rounds. We have a coaching staff that won't be satisfied with where we sit. I'm expecting a real difference against the Knights.

  • At least we're not getting the pRicky: "You'll have to expect more of this" press conferences.
    • Indeed mate. Even though we won't really begin to see Arthur's vision of a team till next year, he's never said anything related to it. From day one he said nothing about inheriting a team or complaining about his roster. He talked about being competitive in every game. I do like what he's done already and still think positively about this year. We will have that something extra next year.
  • Ahhh, it's refreshing to see a new blog that showcases some solid points and doesn't try to procreate propaganda like those other fools blogs.

From the first hit up of last week I knew we would lose. Our line speed was non existent and as you said our energy was in the negatives.

I truly hope players wake up this week. If not I can see BA bringing in drastic change. I would love to see degois start, peats has looked sluggish the last two weeks, to be expected given his injury.

As long as we aim up in defence and handle the ball we will dominate, and be competitive in every game. However, that's easier said than done and key players continue to let us down. Bring on next seasons signings because what I am seeing of some of the current crop, completely justifies their signings.

    • Mammojo, in the Tigers and Titans games our backline had no speed, something I have mentioned numerous times previously, even before the matches, and these two teams have speed to burn. The backline selections so concerned me that I picked the opposing team to win in my tipping competition! Unless changes are made our backline picked for tomorrow it will mean we will be flogged by Knights which I have picked to win this week.

    • Warriors, as I said, head scratching first half.
Tigers - both teams were poor. Nobody rubbished the Tigers because they won. If we won, which was possible despite the form, we would be 3/3. I don't understand that game. Big crowd. Both teams played a high tempo game the week before. Both teams had issues.
      Titans atrocious.
We are where we are for various reasons. Some understandable - injuries. Some not - poor energy ( Titans)
    • Excellent post mammojo. No sugar coating, no excuses. Just facts.

    • Yep, putting all of the frog shite aside, I think u have pretty well nailed it. We have had injuries, but so have some other sides & they still put in.

IMO our injury situation has been overstated. Even with our injury toll, on paper we can still field a competitive pack. Mannah, Peats, Lussick, Manu, Gower, Choc, Wicks, & Peni. The decision to regularly select Crappy Joe & DeG & omit Pauli is a coach's call.

Our spine is intact, We have consistently fielded Peats, Sandow, Norman & Hoppa so there has been minimal disruption with our playmakers. The fact that Sandow has been erratic & Hoppa is too slow as FB has nothing to do with injuries. Both selections r our first choice FG options.

Our injuries r mainly concentrated in our 3/4 line. Even then, during the preseason, there were many fans against Champion being considered for a FG role in the centres & Morgs was the preferred FG options for a lot of fans. If u think I'm wrong, go back & have a browse at some of the earlier blogs. The fact we lost Semi & Taka hit us hard I know, but IMO John Folau is a good back up centre & should have been used as such, not on the wing. He is too slow on the wing & is not up to scratch defensively for a FG wing spot. If u r going to incur injuries, IMO I think most coaches would prefer trying to cover an outside back slot rather than somewhere in the spine.

IMO to a large extent, our problems have been self inflicted. Our ball control, team concentration & intensity for 80 mins game time, & our discipline have been dreadful & its a coaches job to fix that. We will soon see what BA has done with the boys for the Newcastle match.

I hope BA is up to it but lets not delude ourselves with a lot of frog shite. Its up to BA to do his job & excuses only indicate abdication of responsibility & I think BA is better than that.

    • Thanks Gem. I had actually knocked back approaches from Parramatta Facebook but then signed a contract to write for League Unlimited. However I can announce that I will use the Round 13 clause and backflip to remain exclusively with 1eyed (except for when it gets copied and pasted by others!) lol
  • I don't think many actually realise that in the Titans game the effort was there and are using that to have a dig. What f@ckd us in that game was piss poor execution and genuine leadership on and off the field.
There was overzealousness in abundance in attack which ultimately lead to poor attacking plays and decisions.
It was this overzealousness from Peats that gave the intercept try, watmough tried too hard and it cost us, Paulo went back to the old ways of running sideways and trying to be a half.
These players who showed great courage in trying to lift the team, unfortunately hindered the halves more so, now this is where we lack leadership, the game was ours for the taking, but our halves did not demand the plays and the coaching staff did not have the game plan to close out a win.
Defensively we were great and the titans points came from our mistakes.
Don't question the players effort, it was there (can't say the same about the tigers game, that was just garbage), our execution or lack of a game plan was why we lost.
There's been a lot of chat about who should partner Foran, I'll say this, both Sandow and Norman need improving!
    • There is a validity in your comments Kurupt. But let me put this to you. There is only a small difference between the effort we saw against the Titans ( which I view as NSW Cup level) and an NRL standard effort. It's almost intangible in being able to say what players had to do differently, but to me it manifested in intensity. Defensively, we held a line but never attacked in defence. At the start of the year I said that the mantra for the team was to attack. Attack with the ball, attack against the ball. We didn't attack against the ball in that game. This meant that we didn't lay any platform to attack with the ball. We didn't intimidate the opposition, something that we did in spades against Souths. You ask the coaching staff whether they were happy with our energy and I know what they'll say. As for Peats and Watmough, they were guilty of being desperate to create something without us having created the platform to execute. They were plays of impatience. Others did not have the energy to put themselves into positions to receive the ball yet those blokes threw the pass. As for Sandow and Norman, there's a bit of a chicken and the egg going on. Will the forwards lay the platform for them to direct the play or will they direct the forwards? I think that is partly answered by the recruitment of Foran yet also answered by pointing to the standout games by Sandow and Norman in the games where the forwards dominated.
