NRL world in mourning over death of former NRL player Karl Lovell at 48
The NRL world is in mourning after the death of a former forward who played for both the Sharks and Eels at just 48.
The rugby league world is in mourning after former Eels and Sharks player Karl Lovell died at the age of 48.
Lovell was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year, and news emerged of his death on Sunday following a short battle with lung cancer.
The New Zealand-born forward played 37 games for the Parramatta Eels after debuting in 1997 and then ran out 16 times for the Sharks in 2002, helping them reach a preliminary final in what was his final NRL match.
He also played two games for the Northern Eagles in 2001 and had two stints with Sheffield and Huddersfield in the English Super League.
After retiring from professional rugby league, Lovell returned to his beloved junior club, the Toukley Hawks, where he spent his time mentoring up-and-coming players and the local community.
And the Hawks shared news of his passing in a statement on Sunday. “The Toukley Hawks community are deeply saddened to hear that one of our own, Karl Lovell, passed away yesterday, after a brave battle with cancer in recent times.”
But the club said his influence extended well beyond his accomplishments on the field.
“Even during his illness, Lovell remained a devoted supporter of the club, making the trip to watch the Hawks in last year’s grand final despite his declining health,” the club wrote.
“Throughout his illness, Karl’s passion for the Hawks never wavered. He took great pride in the club’s recent success and was determined to support the team whenever he could, even making the trip to Morry Breen last year to cheer on the boys in the Grand Final.
“Just as Karl was proud of his beloved Hawks, everyone who knew him was inspired by the strength, courage, and resilience he displayed throughout his battle with illness.”
The Hawks finished their tribute by giving condolences to the Lovell family, in particular his wife Megan and their two daughters.
“On behalf of all at the Hawks, we send our thoughts and love to his wife Megan and his girls, parents Lorraine and Wes and sister Natasha and her family at this very sad time. Rest in Peace Karl.”
The news led to an outpouring of support and grief online from the rugby league world.
