Reni Matua and his bout of depression.

Interesting read this.

Amazing how many people suffer from depression that are in professional roles like athletes.

Not sure whether it's the pressure they put on themselves to perform or is it the thought of not making the most of while you can.

I'm pretty sure Chad Robinson was tied up in a similar incident after his career ended.

Sad that people who take their own lives think it's the only solution to solve a problem.

John Boyle.

  • It's the loss of comradery that most struggle with, having been part of something for so long and then all of a sudden, not. It's akin to grief really.

  • I suppose we are all synced to be wanted , part of something be it work , family , sport. Pub or whatever . Purpose to get up and get out of the door each day . Take that away and people struggle . I think the top sports stars have better pathways to success after retirement than just joe blow .

Cooper Cronk will make just as much post footy as he made in it . Smith , slater the same . The guy that played 40 games with no skill set or connections post footy is the vulnerable one
  • Depression can hit anyone, and often doesn't really have a reason why.
  • A career at the eels leads anyone to depression
    • Being an eels supporter means you'll likely be battling it most your life
  • Too many concussions can also lead to depression , among other cognitive and psychological problems.
    • There was a write up about this recently eggy. Spot on mate.

Also concussions could be connected to early dementia, but studies are not complete yet.

  • Reni is so lucky to have a great mate in Tonga
