Playing two dummy halves

Perhaps the most interesting thing, for me, to come out of the post-season comments was Brad Arthur's revelation that he is likely to play two hookers next year starting with Peats with De Gois coming off the bench.

I wonder if his thoughts surrounding that, come down to how well stocked we are in the dummy half role. As well as these two we have Kaysa Pritchard, who's just about the best of his age-group. It means even if one of the three get injured, you've got the other two to fill the void.

And personally I still think long-term ZDC is a dummy half as well.

Given how well Nathan Peats played at the start of this year, it looked as though Arthur would very much be sticking to the idea of an 80-minute dummy half, but I'm thinking that he's looking at his squad depth, sees the dummy half as a position where we're particularly strong and that's going to influencer how his juggles his roster next year.

  • Nathan Peats, Isaac De Gois, Kaysa Pritchard, Joey Lussick, Zach Dockar-Clay, Nifo Sevi, and Joey Tramontana are all the recognised hookers we have right down to SG Ball level. Some very good talent and the youngest one comes with a lot of accolades. We're going to be sweet for dummy halves for a while.

    • I thought I heard Joey Lussick was gone Ham.

      Wrong info?

    • Nifo played most of his junior footy in the same teams in the bulldogs juniors with my nephew. He was the best up and coming youngster in the doggies development squads up until his dad took him to parra. Awesome talent when he was a half, centre or fullback. Parra are playing him as a hooker but trust me no matter this kid plays he is a loaded gun. Speed to burn and naturally talented. Lost count of how many 100 meter tries he scored. Not surprised at all that he is now mixing it with the big boys. Awesome attitude also.
  • I was thinking along a similar line to this, except without Joseph Paulo in the side. With Peats and Edwards rotating in that middle forward ball playing role, we'd be much more advantaged. Peats is a superior defender and ball-player to Paulo and Edwards is a stronger defender and ball runner.

However, if Watmough comes, we'll also have Manu Ma'u, Edwards, Moeroa, Pauli Pauli, Gower (probably prop), etc.

  • Either way on the Watmough front, I think you may be right that Peats ability to play that middle-playmaker role could be a significant part of Arthur's thinking. A few people have suggested Peats playing seven and I guess that would almost thrust him into a more traditional number seven position.

My original thinking when I heard the news, was pretty negative as I couldn't imagine Peats contributing all that much as a back-rower but if it's to play the Paulo news then yeh, I can see that working.

  • Will Watmough demand the #11 jersey even though he plays lock? It already confuses some posters who don't really watch the game, will we want to confuse most of the fan-base too?

  • Has it been "officially" confirmed anywhere that Sefa has been re-signed for a few more years with us? Haven't seen an announcement from the club myself unless I've overlooked anything... And just to clarify, I hope we don't have Sefa for next year and beyond.

  • The way Peats plays now (always flat ouy) Im concerned that he may burn out very quickly. He came to us injured then the new injury throughout the year. Until he controls this I would use De Gois off the bench at short intervals and give Peats a rest.
  • Hay Miatch did we resign paulo
