The events at 79.59 seconds in the Panthers match tonight make me wonder whether it worthwhile to explore a rule change.

Where such a game changing moment occurs the captain has the option of calling for a video refereering appeal to review the decision. Say each captain has 2 or 3 appeals they can make. It's not unlike the new rules introduced into cricket.

It won't eliminate all refereeing blunders, but it just might make the odd difference.

  • Stop blaming the refs for the loss. Refs make poor decisions but we allowed it to happen.
Why didnt burt look or consult the ref for 6 again? Why cudnt we play out less than a minute left in the game without allowing the panthers one more play?
Watch the last set and see how poorly we ended the game. Played the ball to fast and didnt kick for touch on tackle 5. FFS y wud u even allow a chance of a charge down on the last play!!!
    • Buzz Man: You can blame the ref when they stuff up. The players didn't allow the ref to stop the clock with one second to go when the rule book says a ref can not stop the clock due to a turn over of possession. Burt thought like everyone else it was a charge down with six to go. Ok he got it wrong so what happens next the siren sounds but wait for it in steps the ref against the rule book he stops the clock to ensure Penrith get one last play. What do you mean stop blaming the ref.
  • Im sayn dnt blame the ref for the loss, after we put ourself in that position.
If we had kicked into touch it wud hav been ova. How does any player on last tackle allow a charge down to hapoen?
And wid burt his experience shud hav helped his decision. I dnt understand y he cudnt hav seen the ref call play on or 6 again?
    • Come on, I assume you saw the game, tell me you didn't think that was a charge down with six to go? and as I said "Ok he got it wrong so what happens next the siren sounds but wait for it in steps the ref against the rule book he stops the clock to ensure Penrith get one last play. What do you mean stop blaming the ref." You do have to play to the ref's call and Parra did loose the game. But I would blame the ref's call before blaming the players.
      • buzz man watch the last set again- was at game so not certain but time stopped and hindy called out about slow play balls. couldn't slow it down any more
      • Im not disagreeing wid u in regards to the refs call.
Understand my point is we let it get to that point, which is unacceptable in my opinion.
Just as curiosity was it hayne who kicked that last charge down?
      • weezy - where do you get it was Burt's fault for not kicking it dead.

The ref ruled a change over so no matter what Burt did it was STILL GOING TO BE A CHANGE OVER.

Get it ? Got it? Good !

    • Buzz Man, I agree with your comment. We shouldn't have put ourselves in that position. That whole last set of ours was farcical.

  • Just saw this I posted a blog calling for the same thing. Totally agree.

  • The NRL is starting to lose a lot of credibility from betting influence, refereeing decisions and games being decided unfairly.

Here's one innovation I think would really help to rub out poor refereeing decisions. In the NFL, each coach has two challenges to use during the game - they only ever get two irrespective of whther the challenge is successful. They can be used during stoppages in play.

Why don't we give Coaches in the NRL two challenges that could be used to refer a decision to the Video Ref. I don't think this would slow the game down as the Challenges would only be used when the game is stopped anyway (such as where a try has been scored).

That way we are not relying on the whims of the Refs to decide when calls get referred upstairs or to make inexplicable decisions on the field. Most other sports are introducing challenges, why not the NRL?
