The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Russell as an NRL Assistant Coach, effective from the 2027 season.
Russell joins the Eels after more than a decade of coaching experience across elite rugby league pathways and high-performance programs, most recently with the Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.
Widely respected for his disciplined approach and attention to detail, Russell has built a reputation as a defensively minded coach who consistently develops players and teams to perform at a high level.
Parramatta Eels Head Coach Jason Ryles said Russell's experience and proven record of success made him an outstanding addition to the Club's coaching staff.
"Mark is an experienced coach with a strong track record of success across several high-performing systems," Ryles said.
"What stood out to me is his attention to detail, particularly on the defensive side of the game, and the way he genuinely cares for the people he coaches.
"He's someone who values discipline, accountability and hard work, while also creating an environment where players feel supported and can grow. We're excited to have him join our coaching staff and contribute to what we're building at Parramatta."
Russell served as Head Coach of the Melbourne Storm's Jersey Flegg Cup side, leading the team to the 2025 premiership. Most recently he held key development roles as NSW Cup Head Coach and Senior Academy Coach, helping nurture emerging talent while contributing to successful high-performance environments.
Russell joins the Eels following the recent departure of Assistant Coach Sam Moa. The Eels thank Sam for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future.

Just wondering why we are excited over thus dude ? Again I know nothing about him or his abilities? On the surface it seems like Ryles is giving another mate a job ?
Is a breach of his site hate speech policy that he's imposed on everyone.
Just becase there are very real and direct link between Ryles and
Brown
Weismental
Pissant ( most questionable contract of all due to Ryles good mate Anasta and his client benefited from this convenient agreement the most )
And now Mark Russell .
Does not mean that Ryles is more inclined to hire his associates , hence why I stated " on the surface " and actually asked for some more info from those who may know more , or is it just a fluke that people that Jason has worked with closely are the best candidates for our vancant roles ?.
People want changes,changes made and still not happy, if we dont get flogged 50+ the first round, I'll be a believer haha
Big upgrade from Moa in my opinion. Storm didn't want to lose him by the looks of it either. I wonder if wisemantle holds his position, I do think he has a wonderful attacking brain but sometimes I think the attack is too flamboyant, could dial it back too.
Under Wisemantel though I feel like we've become a better team in the air. Brian Kelly, Jordan Samrani and Sean Russell all became pretty damn good under cross field bombs.
As good as we have been in the air, I feel we get caught out in our backline play and it seems clunky. Our wingers not our top try scorers probably shows this. It may be talent as well.
But is not Sam Moa going to work with Trent Robinson?.....Gucci can you tell me if that is a promotion or a distraction?.....surely not a demotion?

Tbf sam moa will have a much better roster to work with at the roosters.

Coaching success is tied into many things identity culture recruitment.
We are missing a trick in a few of these key areas.
Identity and Recruitment are the 2 key ones here imo.
We are at the moment a finesse side we aren't overly physical and that's something Sam Moa can't coach.Our identity is a hard working side that doesn't have the talent to compete with the best.Yes we have an identity but it's a continued work in progress.Recruitment well dependent on what and who we want to be or maximise that identity it is just key that physicality in the fowards and athleticism in our backs is injected.
Coaching for me is so subjective it really is imo if you don't have the tools for the job well this is what you get a continued mishmash trying to find the answer.Alignment is a popular word that the good clubs have from top to bottom and filters down.With us I'm not sure we are that way inclined either.
I hope this is the 1st Dommino towards to change
