    • Dummy half run metres are a thing of luck in many ways, though.

Sometimes, you just peel off quickly as a defensive team and it allows for a quick play-the-ball and if you have a guy like McDonald that loves a good run of dummy half, he'll make the most of it and try to catch teams napping.

It's actually a lot harder to stop than you may think as a defensive team. The good dummy half runners are always on the lookout for when they can have their next opportunity.

  • The thing is, though, the running aspect of a hooker isn't a prevalent factor in a BA-led side.
The fundamental role for a hooker in BA's system is the line speed and nothing more, as well as sturdy defence.
For him, if his hooker can do those things, he's a happy man. We have enough creative nous elsewhere to not have to worry about our hooker creating that like Smith or Farah.

It can cause trouble in that regard but we've shown that for the most part, we can handle that quick dummy half play so far.

  • Now there is one for the purists who want CONSISTENCY from the refs

Penalty count  8/5 against the Eels. Consistent with the past several years.

In that is a concern for Brad Arthur?

Again we dominated the possession - but down on last week?

Completions around last weeks effort I think 79% I am known as a hard task master and would like to see that consistently in the higher 80% mark..

Errors 9/11 for Eels - not bad.

Russell Packer giving away the MOST errors FOR THE EELS is indeed most encouraging. If we can maintain this stat we will be very hard to beat. (TeeHee Ricky)

Oh look at the stats for that tub of lard O'Brien - up yours knockers!

Frankie's stats are a little better than I expected - nice.

Of particular pleasing interest is the "across the board" tackle breaks by so many of our players - that has got to keep the pressure on the opposition, and when added to the line breaks and line break assists, possibly demonstrates our new found attacking flair.

All in all the numbers are pretty good for 2017.

Ricky - do you have goal kicking stats please and kicks from dummy half?

    • I'll just break down a reply into bits, Col, to establish the points for each.

      1) Ill-discipline, no matter how much a coach emphasises it or tries to stop it, it'll creep into the game regardless. I think in terms of an NRL game, an 8-5 penalty count - whether it's in our favour or not - is a good sign that both teams have actually been quite good in terms of discipline. In the context of the game nowadays and with the rules in place, it's quite a low amount.

      2) The possession, if I recall correctly, is roughly around the same at present. Most of the top teams hover around 78-83% on average across the season, so we're in good shape there.

      3) Errors are part & parcel and so much can happen with them and they can happen in so many ways that preventing them is nigh on impossible.

      4) As for goal-kicking stats; Gutherson was 3/7 this week at 42%. Compare that to Widdop who was 2/3 at 66%.
As for dummy half kicking, it is no longer a record statistics as such. However, Kaysa did have 1 kick of 8m in the game compared to none for McInnes.

  • Vave must be close to taking Obrien's spot, with 3 missed tackles in 27 minutes - it's time to go Windscreens Obrien..
    • It's not ideal but Kaysa missing 5 tackles is the part that concerns me more.

His defence is usually much, much sturdier than that.

    • Yes but at least Kaysa played almost 80 minutes.
With Obrien's average, he would have missed 8 in 80 minutes of play.

Plus, his hit ups are just ok.
  • The length they play is irrelevant.
Kaysa's on the field longer and defending in the middle of the field for longer periods of time. If we have him missing too many tackles and thus rely on others to make cover tackles because he's missed some, then it takes someone else out of our defensive line that good teams like the Storm or the Cowboys can exploit.

That, in turn, leads to more points scored against us. It's worrying in that regard and I certainly hope it's a one-off for Kaysa.

  • Given the middle defence is rarely 1 on 1 Ricky if Kaysa is at least stopping the player - or at worst slowing him down this does help to diminish metres made by the opposition.

Sort of a double edged stat imo.

What do you think of this new idea from the TV guys with Post contact metres made?

    • That's true but a lot of Kaysa's misses are genuine misses and not ones where he hangs on and then drops off.
So it's something he has to work on particularly when he's the one to make first contact.

Post-contact metres are a good stat, however - and this is why I don't use them - they're purely down ti interpretation and nothing more.
As I mentioned when this subject last came up, you could ask five people how many post-contact metres a player made and you'd get five different numbers. It's just not all that accurate from a statistical perspective.
