Well thats probably the play now with how Volkman is going..
You cant resign him then play him in cup at 6 wasting his development and one of our juniors as well just to play Luai in the NRL...
Actually can we do a deal with the Riff? Send Luai back to them for a year and they send Blaize to us to play in the centres? I dunno...
Why can't you? He would know the deal when signs it. Luai has played Origin, won comps. Ryles knows what he has in Volkman, not like he has just played well the last few weeks. He has most of the year.
I mean does going back to cup hinder his development? A little, but he also has Luai there for him to learn off on how to play 6. Someone of same heritage, Samoa, as him.
Would I prefer Luai not be here instead of a one year stop? Yes. But with him here, he is starting.
You get to a point playing cup where you stop getting better and start just becoming another cup player. You need to play NRL to become a better player.
You need better players around you to develop as well especially for a half.
I doubt he learns much from Luia in 27 as well.
I just think we needed to take a punt this year with either volkman or Lorenzo as the NRL 6 and stick with them. We were not winning a competition so why not use that time to give them first grade experience.
Why didn't we learn from Pezet? These one year bridge contracts for spine players are terrible ideas.
Yes hopefully we keep Volk in it he keeps up his form. As for Luai, he's hardly set the world on fire this year anyway, I'd prefer he didn't come - he can head over to PNG early and help them recruit the rest of their team.
Don't forget, its easy to play when you're playing for a new deal. Where was Volkman last year. He was very inconsistent. Ill tend to offer him less as he needs more consistency to be offered a regular starting contract. If people think we're going to offer 409k they're dreaming.

Last year we still had Brown in the side and it looked like Joash was getting the nod at 6 infront of Volkman...
In CUP he was the main reason they went so well and made the finals.
This year with 17 games under his belt he has gotten better each game... Of course he will be inconsistent as the players around him keeps changing...
To be fair for Volkman, he was coming off missing an entire season from shoulder surgery. He didn't have a pre-season or any reserve grade footy. Then was thrown in out of necessity and got hammered in both his games. That hinders confidence.

Ryles wants him as a back up/ project player - 250k maximum.

I don't think anyone expected all of this from Volkman not even any of the other clubs or Perth bears would have chased him hard lol. Ryles is a big reason why Volkman has found his confidence and most likely why he'll stay at the eels long term.
Ryles said yesterday we're talking to Ron's management. So I'd say if there is a deal available that works for both parties it'll be made.
