All out of spite

I enquired today with the Leagues Club as to whether any additional motions have been put forth for the upcoming Annual General Meeting. Apparently, they haven’t.

That means the Leagues Club board will, barring anything unforeseen, see our their two year terms. To get any kind of spill motion up at the AGM, you needed to submit it 21 days prior to the AGM. We’re now well inside that period. The board is safe (from an AGM perspective at least).

Some of you will see that as a positive. Others not so much.

I see this as mind-bogglingly infuriating. Not that the board will stay or go. But it’s simply beyond fathomable to me, that the individuals/groups who have very deliberately chosen to leak inside information to the media and via public channels, seemingly did it purely out of spite.

Now, I’m going to admit right now - I was completely wrong about you  guys that went to all this trouble. I thought you had some grand master plan to overthrow the board, and you would make an attempt to dislodge at least some members of the board at the AGM. That would be smart, if you had a couple of hundred ‘friends and family’ that would probably be enough to win any AGM vote.

So while the whole affair has sickened me as an Eels supporter, from a political point of view, I could actually muster some begrudging respect. And, if you truly believe that the current board is so inept and that it is best for the long-term interests of the club to overthrow them, I can even see how you might justify your actions to yourself, in some kind of strange, delusional fashion.

However, I was wrong. Either a) you’re just not that smart or b) you truly are so bitter and twisted that you’d pull down the entire club for basically pure entertainment value.

There is some chance that in the washup, that some of the key figures at the head of our administration will have to step down from the football club. If that happens I hope you enjoy your pyrrhic little victory while the rest of the supporter base suffers.

And when the AGM rolls around, and you, or your buddies, boldly front up to the microphone to grandstand and berate the board, you should know, that we all know. The reality is that the most directly contributing factor to losing points was not boardroom incompetence or salary cap cheating, it was your treason.

And in the end, you didn’t even have the guts or the smarts to follow it through, and organise a respectable coup. Absolute cowards

P.S. I’m wondering if the mysterious 28 point rumour doing the rounds right now, which cannot possibly be accurate, is a final desperate attempt to pressure the board to stand down, if there has finally been a realisation this has all been for nothing. Let me state again in case you missed the comment I made in another blog - there is a formal NRL breach notice process described in detail within the NRL rules. No, negotiations will take place with the club until they have been provided with a breach notice and that won’t happen until the investigation is completed, which won’t take place until the end of this week at the very earliest. Up until this point, every body throwing around numbers and punishments are simply guessing. Pay it no attention .

  • I have a motto, I try to apply to everything I do Fong. Those without a Plan B don't deserve to have their Plan A succeed. I think it far more likely they were able to get the 100 sigs they needed for a spill motion.

  • Brilliant post Phil. Indeed those responsible for the leaks are outright bastards.

  • Phil absolutely nailed it in every word.  Maybe the intent also included the pure joy that these termites may have in seeing the club, supporters, players & all the football staff all kept in a state of anxiety over what may or may not happen. Keep the burning hatred running like burning oil that used to be used as a weapon against the enemies.  Problem is they are the enemies & deserve to be somehow found out & be exposed for what they have done,

  • I'm on the record as not caring much about Board-talk. So without wading into discussion of who may have done what and to whom, I'll point out here that there is a big supposition lurking in the claim that treasonous troublemakers seem to be clueless if they will drag the Board down but not use the AGM to stage a coup. The supposition in question is that staging a coup is said troublemakers obvious route to power. But against that idea is the basic principle of staying out of the blast zone when destroying something. So if there are troublemakers providing info to media and the NRL with the intent of knocking over the Board, they could be playing a long game of waiting for the whole thing to explode, staying out of the blast zone, and riding to the rescue when the dust settles.

To be honest, firing shots at the troublemakers because they did not move publicly now strikes me as a preemptive move against their long game. And so this blog falls into my category of pointless Eels Board room political bickering, the kind of stuff that got our club in the mess in the first place. It should all stop, starting here.
    • With all due respect, Daz, you're overthinking it. Sometimes I just get pissed off, and need to vent.

  • Well written again phil.  My personal thoughts about this was that it revolved around spite and a handful of people not being wanted or needed.  I also believe trial by media is offensive and very dangerous as the information has little to no vetting, is extremely subjective and for the most part one sided.

  • Spite and stupidity are a hallmark of this club. This whole fiasco demonstrates how inept this board is at cheating, running a club,or even running a business.Every Parra fan should root out a wooden spoon from their kitchen and descend on the board members past and present and pummel them with the spoons ,to within an inch of their lives. Some of these dopes have no shame whatsoever and would appal even the shameless losers on The Jerry Springer show.

  • Yep, agree totally,mate.

  • Maybe it wasn't just spite.

Maybe too much heat in the kitchen and those that leaked just don't have the balls to follow through and take on the job.

  • Oh well........theres always next year ;)

So bloody sick of having to say that every year before the first half of the season is over.

Maybe there is a god, and we are in purgatory as eels fans, we just dont realise it, maybe the godbotherers were right all along.
