Bennett had the above words to say regarding the eels this year and Souths last year, it was also a matter of discussion on the 9 footy show this morning.

  • yep ! That's why you need to do more than start fast and win the effort areas . You can't base your whole game around them . Why we're so hot and cold within games let alone week to week.

  • Only took Skeletor 50 years to work that out ...maybe Brad is on track then?

  • That doesn't seem to be the case for Penrith. Excuses.

    • Or the Broncos, who also took Bennett's strategy during the COVID break.

  • It was a double whammy this year because we had no reserve grade comp to give some of the blokes a spell, or bye rounds.

We definitely hit injuries and the mental/physical wall this year 2 months too early.

Having said that, explain Penrith. They have maintained momentum all the way to a minor premiership and likely a grand final and outperformed Souths. I don't think Bennett is onto a magical formula, but if he thinks it worked for them this year then good for him.

Reminder, another team who didn't flog themselves during COVID was the Broncos. Didn't seem to work too well for them.

    • Cap & all.  The video bit with Bennent in it was shown on the footy show this morning, The online stuff seems a bit cut from his full statement.  It came in a specific part of the footy show that the experts were commenting on the game especially the 2nd half when the eels fell to pieces.

In a nutshell what Bennett made comment on was relevant to the way the eels started this year strong, and then had a slide mid year, both are correct points but what he then went on to say the eels basically played the same as Souths did last year where they started off strong in the beginning and then had a slide, his next point in this regard was that by finals time the rabbits were gassed and he believed that the fast and hard start to the year, drained the team, this season they changed tactics by reversing the start and not going in over hard and then building towards the finals the opposite to last season.

His shortish comment that was in answer to how he saw the eels, was that the eels did the same as the Souths of last year did, they were gassed out by the time they got to the finals this season.  There were a couple of comments also that he saw the eels as an improved side, though not fresh.

I sort of think he was giving something of a compliment for the eels, a rarity for him really.  One other aspect that was dwelt on by the experts there was MM's Missed goal and the lack of urgency of the eels players that were slow to react, VT, also the aspect of the loss of 4 regular NRL eels players.

As for the horses, little doubt in my mind there was a total loss of the coach by the players and his mannerisms, I would think a bit had to do with him not being a queenslander either.

Penrith have slowly built into a top team this year, they have a very well balanced team with youth and experienced players, they will be hard to beat as a consequence, I give them another year and as players come off contract they are likely to suffer with signing the majority of them unless there's a number of retirements.  There will be more than a couple that will be chased by other clubs.

  • Bennett is the master at timing his run. That's undeniable.
However I'm not so sure it's the way to go. Effectively accepting early season losses and banking on a late charge. Storm and Roosters never do that. Penrith didn't do that.
Most Premiers are the best side all season. It's rare for the fairy tale late finisher to take out the entire thing.

    • Mutt, without last years results with me, IIRC Souths did go out hard early in the round and dropped off as the year went on, they certainly dropped off end of the year.

What I believe he is saying is that the team/s need to start strong, win well but hold back a bit to conserve strengths for the end of the year finals. It also means you have to play strong to keep the wins up and position on the table whereby you can control whats in front of you.  Its not necessarily accepting early season, or even mid season losses rather more akin to good pacing.

Watching how chooks and canberra played, it certainly looked a bit like a carbon copy of what Bennet was talking about as well. IIRC Raiders were down somewhat earlier in the season.

  • There's a model in training called periodisation. It was created by the Russians IIRC for their Olympic athletes and was responsible for a lot of the gold medals they got back in the 70's and 80's. The idea is that you alternate training volume with intensity (it's called wave loading). You don't train them simultaneously though; that will result in fatigue, over training and injuries etc. In a sporting sense, intensity is used to maintain what you built with the volume side of training, in preperation for each match. It's why the go so hard during pre-season, to build up a foundation, then maintain it. It's up to the trainers etc at the club to work out this balance during the season. These are not PT's who did a 3 month Cert 4 in Fitness either. They're all diploma graduates in Exercise Science so should be right on top of it.

I do believe BA (and staff) flogged them about the middle of the year, hoping to back off the volume and just keep up the intensity in preparation for the finals. Remember he harped on about defence. But with no byes, and a lack of depth off the bench, I think some players were simply running on empty. In a lot of games we limped over for the win, but were hardly convincing. An over reliance on Paulo and RCG, without decent backup from the bench props means these guys were overused. Our defensive issues stemmed from a lack of effort in the middle, so I think Bennett is spot on. The lack of a reserve grade comp doesn't help either, so you simply can't just pick a guy from reserves in order to give someone a rest.

I do hope there is a full review when the dust settles and they have a good hard look at how they trained and how this could be done a lot better. Next season we should have things a bit more back to normal, but I hope some lessons are learned from the mistakes of this year.
