William Marshall Mason.

Noticed in todays telegraph that we are in the hunt for Big Willies signature (Along with the Cowboys, Dogs and a host of English super League Clubs mind you).

Just wanted to know what everyone's opinion of the Big Fella is and their feelings towards him possibly coming out Parramatta way.

Obviously Willie has copped a lot of critiscism over the years, some definetely warranted however I believe a lot of the innuendo that has floated on about him has been based soley on his reputation rather than substance. I believe because of his directness and his belief in being true to himself which unfolds in him speaking his opinion publicly, people just take him as arrogant, which is completely understandable.

I personally would love Willie in the blue and gold. I think he has matured immensely as a person and a leader over the past few seasons and I still believe he can add a lot to our team on the park as well. Whenever a player is interviewed about their experiences about playing alongside Willie reviews are always positive about him.

I think Willie could be the perfect compensation for the loss of Cayless. Poore to start (definate argument that Mannah should) with Willie on the bench as our 4th Prop. More importantly though Willies experience and leadership qualities would be a great addition to the squad especially considering the loss of Cayless, I'm sure Hindy wouldn't mind the big fella alongside him as a leader for a season or two.

  • Nice can of worms you've opened up here blueNgold.
Mason can play, there's no doubting that, and he is travelling well at the moment with the Cowboys.
He is closer to retirement than the start of his career, so I wouldn't want to pay overs for him. I think he could play a prop rotation role for us, but he does bring baggage and the media with him - deserved or undeserved. He seems to have the persona that it's more about him than the team, but you don't hear the players he has played with saying that. Frought with danger in signing him for any club.
    • Very wise words Jim.
  • I have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised with Mason's form this year.
He seems to be putting football first above all else for a change, and is commtited to ensuring that he plays the best footy he possibly can which is great to see.
Having said that, I don't think we need him as most of our forwards are getting the job done, and are bound to contracts for the next few years.
  • You're right Ricky - no surprises this is happening because the Cowboys are away from the Sydney media spotlight.
He'd play well at the Warriors and Storm for similar reasons, maybe even the Knights, but the media circus down here would be too much for him (and us) I fear.
  • When you look at Masons career and you take out the time he has spent in the front row plus the time he has been coming back from ijnury and he has always been brilliant as a fit 2nd rower. He was very good last year after a knee reconstruction.

I would love him in the side... but what about his influence on others?

I think DA is one perosn that could keep him in line.... coinflip IMO as to wether we should sign him or not.
  • Man.... all this speculation about who were signing is driving me nuts!! I wish they would just announce something already... !!

Last nights footy show showed Vossy saying we are in line to sign a big name player (ah durrrrr, we kinda knew this long time ago) but can we get some specifics instead of rumours... ?? Vossy made it seem like he knew something we didn't, in the end he was just stating the bleeding obvious.... but anyway....

Willie would be a nice signing, hes playing some good footy, although I dont think we need him right now, our forwards are doing a good job, he would come in handy after Caylo retires... and playthedoors, your 100% spot on about paying overs for him... He wants to stay at Cowboys unless he gets a better offer from somewhere, and I hope we don't go overs just to lure him in...
  • Mason would be great off the bench, he plays more of a front rower role now a days and a forward pack like this next year would be awesome-
    8. Poore
    9. MK
    10. Fui
    11. Hindy
    12. Benny
    13. Shack
    bench
    14. Mitchell
    15. Mannah
    16. Horo
    17. Mason
    • Look at clubs to get wooden spoon over last few years....(Take out Storm this year) and Mason been a regular wooden spoon winner. Its no coincidence.
  • Not worth consideration at all. I have no opinion of him being disruptive, slack whatever, I also dont have any opinion of him ability wise (not that he is a bad player). There are definately better back rowers going around (he's not a prop) and younger that are worth less.

That being said why bring him to the club on that alone and then have the worry if he is a a bad influence / distruption etc.

I'm sure nearly every poster on the site could name at least a dozen compareable back rowers, cheaper, without the hype that are younger.

    Simple.
  • Justin Horo firstly! tell me he is on as much as Mason....
