William Hopoate, is he overrated?

I know he's a good player, solid defence, and generally dependable.

I haven't been overly excited by Hopoate, just satisfied at best. I can't help but feel the media have a biased opinion based on his good character rather than his 2014 form.

Hopoate to me lacks that wow factor, I don't recall him, not once doing something on the field that had me thinking "wow" He seems to lack speed, and although he's beating his defender on occasion, I don't recall him making a line break of any significance.

I don't recall Hopoate having any success under the high ball, I dare say his highlight reel would struggle to go for a few minutes.

Am I missing something? Is he a marque worthy? Would he be worth the 800K we reportedly signed him for when his contact is up with us? I know he was out of the game for two years, should we expect him to be dynamic next season? I don't get the hype.

  • Not worth 800K at this stage.

    • Lucky he's not on 800k.

    • Whilst it would be good to have either Folau or Hoppa in the team I think we'll always be paying too much for the output on the field. It appears Hayne will be our fullback long-term now, so we need to build our halves and backline around him. I wouldn't have either. I think we have potentially two solid centres in Morgan and Davis. I know earlier in the year I was critical of Morgan's performances in NSW cup but I think in the past 2 matches he's shown that he has something that we need in our outside backs, speed. What he needs to work on majorly is how he links up with his winger, if he can get that in check and not only create space for himself but also his winger he could become a really good club centre. From what I've seen in the 20's Davis has the potential to become a really good all-round centre. When he gets into space it's pretty much hands down he's scored a try, he can hit a hole and also use his awkward body to break tackles, and he's set up Goodall and his winger numerous times this year.

If the chance arose that you could have at least 1 of them on decent money then you would sign them no questions asked.

    • I'd rather Hoppa. He has youth on his side
  • FFS.

    Next....

IH8, maybe get the facts first?

    800k? Come on mate, that's 1eyed 'belief'.

    • Enlighten us Punk Floyd, this is the figure reported when he signed, Zero tackle has had him listed at 800k for 3 years.

    • I never said he was actually getting paid 800K

    • Zero Tackle? lol

He, his father and brother signed collectively for 800k...reportedly.

Does anyone really know what the players are on? Clutching at straws.

And IH8..."Not worth 800K at this stage".

Seems like you are stating he's on 800k to me?

  • He needs more time. I was surprised by what appeared to be a lack of pace. He is all class and by next season (injury free) he will be value for money.

  • 800k For him and his father I've heard, does anyone know what his dad's role is? Either way I'd much rather a 200-250K Morgan over a 500K hoppa. Nonetheless, we've locked him up so it's not worth complaining about since his doing his job ATM.
