Why the Soldiers ?

It might seem like a silly question BUT why were the Military on display for the Cowboys last night with soldiers in the honorary stance which is generally only used for military personal? As good as Jonathon Thurston might be at Rugby League and the fact there is a military base stationed near Townsville. The military has nothing to do with Rugby League and using soldiers with weapons in an honorary stance which should really only be used for those who have served their country in the most ultimate sacrifice. I personally was a little taken back. I admire Thurstons contribution to Rugby League but it has nothing to do or compare to a soldiers contribution to his country.

  • Military town. But yeah seemed a bit OTT.

  • To protect B.A from us fans!!!!

  • To give the refs medal of honour
  • Agree... was a bit rich. Many would say possibly a bit insulting to those that have fought and died serving the country. He might be real good at it, but wingnut just plays footy... far cry from taking bullets for your country.

Bloody hell... imagine when Cheat Grub Smith retires... there will be a full military parade in every state, naval ships in every port, public holiday declared, keys to every city given etc.

    • That wouldn't surprise me Will.

  • They did honour him due to the services he provides the community up there. He does a lot to help around, and also, with the whole indigenous community. Anyway, y'all should be worried how pathetic our club is.
  • Townsville is a major Army town along with the navy's patrol boats, its not unusual for the army to be at these matches especially for the retirement of a special player.

I don't see anything wrong with it, and has been a tradition for years in other sports as well. You cannot associate our fallen in combat with what the military does in peacetime, which is in the end to honour people when they are alive. Go and get the charter of what the military in peacetime do, and its a lot more than you might even imagine.

So please don't try to think they are there in honorary stance for military personal, they have to do that for civilians and foreign country dignitaries as well, and I would think they would prefer to stand that way in circumstances like last night than having to do so for political leaders and the like with arms presented.

    • Nothing much there except the military.  Seems right to me

  • It was ridiculous
    • I thought it was a bit over the top. I mean fair enough of he had just come back from 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan but seriously he's just a Rugby League player.
