Why is the Roosters prelim at Allianz?

I certainly don't want to get ahead of myself, but IF the Eels win against the Cows there's no doubt that a crowd of 60,000 would attend the preliminary final with two Sydney clubs playing for a grand final spot. So why has the NRL already decided to have it at Allianz? This is sheer stupidity. Fine if the Cowboys make it but it's a huge waste if the Roosters and Eels are made to play in the smaller stadium.

    • Last time Eels were in a GF qualifier we had 80 something thousand.
  • Allianz is one of 2 sydney venues Which passes the criteria of playing a finals footy game, the other of course being Anz. Up to the roosters if they want to move to Anz which of course they won't.
    • For prelim finals it's entirely up to the NRL to decide where the matches should be played. They have the power over the clubs in this instance. Hell, they forced Manly to take their finals match against the Cows to Allianz a few years back.

    • Well I can say that the NRL makes things up as they go, as the Storm v Broncs prelim is at AAMI park next week. Allianz may qualify just fine but it would be a smarter business decision to select ANZ if the Roosters and Parra comprise the other prelim fixture.

      • It has been the same rules since this finals systrm was first used in about 2012

I know everyone here likes to bash the nrl but try and get your facts straight
  • As state Allianz and ANZ both qualify the teams get to choose which of those grounds they play at and it will sometimes depend on the opponent .

For example it would make sense for the Panthers to play at ANZ but they had a home final against the Dogs a couple of years ago and they selected Allianz as they didn't want to play at the Dogs regular homeground.

The NRL if pre-sales for tickets and expected walk up is high to move the game to ANZ however, they cannot force them as long as it is at an approved ground.

  • I doubt it will attract 60,000. Chooks 10,000 (at most) fans won't travel to ANZ. Parra will only have 30,000 fans tonight at ANZ for a sudden death. If we do make it through after tonight I think Allianz will be big enough for both Sydney teams... around 40,000.
    • You make a good point Zip and I agree your crowd figures would be close to the mark. While Allianz would be big enough, like you said their fans don't travel which is why it would be a good idea if we had the game at ANZ.

We would have the home ground advantage and the atmosphere would be decidedly Blue & Gold :D

  • Let's worry about next week next week.
