Which players in the NRL do you see as being a value investment that you would like to see Parramatta sign?

Often when we discuss player signings, we talk about a player's rumoured market price and their current form. Is that how we should be approaching player recruitment?

Or are we simply gambling and hoping we strike gold?

The way I'm running this little experiment, is to see if we can tie the investment frameworks of renowned investors Warren Buffett and Ben Graham into the NRL player market.

The approach is simple: Great players at a fair price.

That doesn't mean you can't target marquee players, or you're trying to sign Cleary on $500K/year.

It means you're identifying players who have a strong foundation to their game, with a track record that you can quantify.

If you bought them now, for a 4 year contract, would you be happy to have them at the end of that contract, or would you theoretically be able to sell them at a profit?

I had this discussion yesterday regarding Matt Burton.

The market probably rates him at $1m/year, but is that his underlying value to a club? What about his performances at Canterbury make him a million dollar player?

Or would he present an overvalued asset? Would you draw the line at $700k/year as his track record indicates that's where he tops out?

Could you compare him to Dylan Brown in that we saw $1.4m/year as beyond his actual value and that his track record indicated that remaining at Parramatta would represent a poor investment?

Criteria:

- Player of your choosing at any level

- What the market rate is

- What you would pay and why

- Which players you think would be overvalued/undervalued

- How would this align with our need to recruit outside backs?

Haha... I bet that kept a lot of accountants up at night.

Ha...I said 1.1m/1.2m to keep Dylan, HOE. Not 1m... Your numbers are very slippery in both directions, arent they. Almost as slippery as Daz's 'scapegoat'.

He was 950k/1m when we let him walk, which I think we can agree, has been a masterstroke.

                    • No doubt, NOS. My late friend game me the secret answer to Kerry Packer's tricky question.

It was all very slippery. Elastic bands. Cigars. The works.

          • To get Katoa it's 1.5 mill per season paying market values not doing it you have to put all the chips in the middle and make him the richest offer in nrl history to move him.1.2-1.3 isn't enough. That's what it cost to move DB if you want Katoa to be the face it's 1.5 10 yr deal making it the richest deal in nrl history.Salary cap is on the up so your offer has to reflect that.

Whyte same same you don't resign Jnr and push the chips in again it's 7 figures to get him out of the Roosters nothing less.

            • Coryn, you're probably on the money, tbh.

              $1.5m for 10.

We're all Mad here and it's always tea time.

Mr Brown. Mr O'Sullivan. Eat your heart out.

            • Coryn, with Katoa, paying 1.3/1.4m on the cap with some juicy TPA's would be worth every cent, imo.

Save money on the workers, the forwards, the ones who aren't blessed with endless talent and will give you 110% every week. The Jack Williams, Dylan Walker types who give you value for cost.

It's a strategy that has worked for the Storm for 20+ years.

IMO only, Whyte is worth 900-950k to the Eels because its a huge roster hole that is impacting every other position.

        • NOS, that's a fascinating train of thought. Many here will call you crazy, but I like the idea.

Realistically we are not competing next year, so the earliest window for us is 2028 anyway, and Moses is on the downhill slope now, so maybe it is time to move on.

To defer for one more year with the players and plan you've put there, I think it's a great idea. In fact it's what I'd hope our big wigs are considering every day when they sit down at their desk. Future planning is probably more important than next years roster in many ways.

          • Or maybe you're just as crazy, Meelky?? Hey??

            But yep, exactly.

Currently, we are trying to buy in on companies that have already run - mid season purchases, 12month contracts, players out of favour - they might help you win more games, be more competitive, but will they change the underlying direction?

Our best hope is the next generation - both within & externally - chasing a future ‘disrupter’ over a strong performer right now… and that will take huge $$ to entice.

We give up our best (and most valuable) player, knowing it's a wasted investment, and potentially purchase the ‘next’ Cleary, Haas, Herbie, for far less, and we build around them from within with Iongi, TDS, Smith, Lorenzo and all these young forwards.

We aren't attracting anyone with our good looks, we look awful, it's the $$, plain and simple.

The future isn’t now, it’s in the future, what’s ‘now’ can be meticulous planning, strategy, and a lot of educated risk, so next time the future is now, we don’t look completely unprepared.

Or, it could fall in a heap.

We could lose members, merch, game day $$ etc, we could lose other players now willing to be as patient.

But, Katoa is the key, his potential is limitless & players would follow, imo.

        • Vaimouga Halisima Layben those 3 especially have been earmarked for the Warriors going foward I don't think you'll get those guys out of there. They look pretty decent and when they played in Wgtn I walked past those 3 and believe you me these guys are units height and size wise.

  • I agree the younger players currently on board are a must to keep

"Absolutely, NOS.
There could be other areas in the cap that could offset the red hole. But I'm just talking about the specifics of the deal. The maths don't add up. Definitely sackable. On thin ice.
