This isn't another manly cheated they should suffer like parra thread.  More can the game wide problem be fixed before the game faces possibly the greatest scandal if full disclosure of all clubs with TPAs, cash payments and cooking the books with outside companies was exposed.

How can they clean the mess as they can't punish all the player managers which are involved.  They all previously dealt with Todd Greenberg at doggies so he knows his screwed if any of them talk.  They have threatened blow lid everywhere and take others down including greenberg if they get in trouble.

If truth got out many people would be facing similar fraud charges as Scott Seward at variety of clubs.  For that reason I would like to see crack fraud squad investigate every club in tandem with the ATO which can use it's powers to obtain financial records of all parties.  Drain the swamp as they say.

We need the head of racing Vlandys or whatever his name is on commission or CEO to clean it all up.  He is not connected to anyone or got history with game.  He is also fearless when comes to standing up to outside figures including crime syndicates and bikies who have threatened him over various investigations into jockeys.

Something needs to be done especially after latest story of a rich benefactor giving money to manly players.  A person can gift up to $10,000 without to much tax issues but more then that there are tax implications so interesting if ATO aren't doing something in background.  Would be huge political play and career maker for anyone who led investigation and blew lid on wide spread corruption.  If they learnt from biggest drug scandal fiasco and don't hold big press conference while they gather financial records in background, they will have more success.  Unlike drug scandal that fizzled there was very little paperwork or records.  Money always has a trail.  The ATO can compare lifestyle v earnings, and large sudden expenditures out of the norm or banks that stay untouched for months or minimal withdrawals.  They would be able immunity from charges for information on others and more likely give others up when hard evidence and paper records laid out.  They will also need answers to show how a player lives without withdrawing money.  It all leads to cash payments

Now a rich grandma has been exposed as delivering TPA to manly players.

If nothing was given in return such as value a player can deliver to a business then it is a gift hence worth scrutinising by ATO.

Another issue I have is the NRL signed off on the above TPA.  TPAs are meant to be sponsorships for players with something in return for the business, but it blown out to money for nothing in return.  They started when St George bank could not sponsor Trent Barrett as an ambassador.

  • Either the game gets rid of TPA's or the salary cap. It's not achievable to have both. Alternatively, the salary cap becomes flexible to assist teams who don't have access to TPA's.
  • The other option is market value of each player on the salary cap just as Paul Kent keeps harping on about. Problem with that is it is selective in who picks the value.

One option I like is when a player is offered to clubs, all contracts are submitted to nrl. Club must be able fit player in their cap at the time and no rules for buying a player then offloading contracted players to make room. This will mean cap management would be harder but would work very well in short trading window. A full list of players on offer would be distributed to all clubs and once they submit their offers the NRL then average it out as that is true market value and will spread the talent. If club can't afford them at average market value they don't get the player.
Yes it could allow clubs with space in cap to manipulate the market however clubs must be able to afford the player and be willing to follow up offer if player accepts.
Unlimited TPAs or extra money can be paid on top of market value on salary cap and would be used to lure players and keep them happy.
Would also mean clubs more likely resigning players prior to them going to market. New contracts for existing players must be signed off prior to deadline of other clubs being able place offer otherwise player once again becomes subject to the market price rule.

A large bonus of this system is loyalty and bringing juniors through is rewarded if clubs resign them early. There would need be additional rule to ensure players have reasonable value on cap if came through from junior and always resigned before going to market though. Especially once become rep player or superstar.

    • Brissy it maybe easier to limit TPA's then to ban them from a perspective of restraint of trade. I am sure that someone out there will know how it works.

A limit could be say 20% of the cap, more or less. It must be remembered that only the elites are getting TPA's, the lesser players who make up the vast majority of NRL players get nothing out of the system. As I said previously it is the elite players who also have all of the say in the players association.

    • JE that is the problem, a lot run of mill players getting small value TPAs as well as top players. As players aren't providing service for the money it doesn't matter who it is for. Club/manager tells business or benefactor we need some cash to sign so and so. We going buy cheap player with tpa AMD add extra to salary cap for high profile recruit to avoid scrutiny.
If club can save 20-30K on a 150-250K player that can go to buying another more experienced player on top of their TPA.
    • I am not aware of that. TPA's I have heard of have all been for Elite players
    • Yeah that would be nice.

As a fan I'd like to know how uneven the playing field is and let teams openly declare how much they are spending on the mentioned.Parra spend x amount Brisbane spend y amount.Always wondered how unevenly slanted the supposed ground that's meant to be equal actually is.

  • March to the lowest TPA... If let's say Gold Coast can only generate $400 000, then the team that's has the most can only use $400 000, that way with the salary cap with the TPA, everyone equal.
  • Didn't you read the stories about our payments to Nevilles because their agent wanted more $$?

  • Agree!!

TPA should be totally separate from the SC. If the Manager can source a TPA (like they're suppose to) then good luck to the player.

If clubs are found to even introduce agents to providers it should be classed as not 'at arms length' and the club penalised. Any provider should be required to advise the NRL as to what the player will be doing for the money and how long the agreement is for. If it is the same length as the NRL contract it is obviously an inducement to sign for that club and the club penalised. If it is obvious the business will get nothing from the deal then call; ion the ATO.

There is a shitload more I can go on with but you get the drift.

  • Make all player’s wages and TPA’s public. (Happens in US and any publicly listed company)

Channel all player payments (wages or TPAs) through the NRL so the player’s remuneration comes from one source and is well documented.

Transparency is the key here. Currently it’s all secrets and brown paper bags. Shine a big spotlight on this and watch the cockroaches scurry away.
