Bring back the shoulder charge. Treat it like any other tackle, if contact is high then it should be treated as a high tackle (penalty, on report, send off etc). There's no reason why shoulder charge body shots should be outlawed.
I hate the Third Party Agreements 'rule' - all players should have a nominal value decided by NRL that goes under the Salary Cap. Players can still get TPAs but we will not end up with situations like Lockyer (there are others) where he was getting $250K on the cap and $1M off it.
If someone 'improves' (ie DCE) then it's your club's good luck they are still on the initial value until an upgrade or expiry. At that time the NRL decides the new nominal value.
This will even up the talent spread big time and give the SC auditor something to do.
I would like to know what the refs do at half time. Do they just sit and have a break or do they go over tapes to see what stuff they missed and/or got wrong. Do the teams get to send a representative to discuss the issues they have with the way the game is going.
Lifting in tackles, in any form should be banned.
Legs tackles should be rewarded with an immediate "Surrender" or "Dominant" call. - Watching players cop a beautiful legs tackle then get up to a quick play the ball makes me sick. It's not in the spirit of the game either.
Charge downs should not be 6 again, instead you get that tackle again only.
Sweep plays - Players out the back receiving the ball inside the lead runner. This is a shepherd every day but clubs like the Bulldogs use it constantly. They were even awarded a try last week when replays showed the player received the ball inside his lead runner (so to speak)
Wrestle - Once a player makes contact with the ground it should be illegal to continue manoeuvring the player by twisting and flipping etc. It's unnecessary and a blight on the game.
Blockers - This one has me completely stumped. The bomb goes up and defending players consistently change their line to block opposing players....never penalised. What is the rule here? Do the refs even know?
Play the ball - Put your foot on it. It's not that hard. They focussed on this a few years ago and I thought it improved the game immensely. Now it seems like a forgotten rule.
18th Man - If a player is ruled out of the game due to an illegal act by the opposition, the 18th man should be allowed onto the bench so the team is not disadvantaged through an illegal act.
Scrums - Either make it at least partially a contest or just forget them completely. I honestly don't mind which but currently they are an embarrassment.
Things that players do that make me scratch my head:
1) Kick for touch - A great opportunity for free territory. Territory is something each player fights and fights so hard for every set, then the ref gives you a shot a 'free' territory. What do most players do? Just chip it out 20 metres and spend the next 4 tackles trying to get to the position on the field that a good kick would have achieved in the first place.
2) Penalties close to the try line - The attacking side has the right to walk the ball back as far as they'd like. The defending side must stay where they originally are. Theoretically you could put 20-30 metres between you and the defending side. What do most players do? Kick it out backwards allowing the defending side to walk forward. Bizarre.
In regards to the Gower tackle, not even a captains challege would never have had that decision overturned
Regarding the Gower incident and Captains Challenge. Maybe it should be a rule that the video ref cannot interfere other than when called upon and the on field referees decision stands until a challenge has been made.
Seriously, and in all honesty, is there some way that this thread can be communicated to Sharp/Seward?
There are some excellent suggestions here from all contributors which I have really enjoyed. If these guys can deliver this information to the NRL rules committee (is there one in league? I know there is in AFL, who actually consult supporters about possible rule changes/amendments) then they may be heard and considered.
For what it's worth I think we should go back to the 5m rule in defense and four/five replacements per game, not interchange (with exceptions for foul play leading to injury, concussion and the blood rule). Keep interchange for park football.
