    • Yep, a lot of people's opinions just go in whatever direction the breeze is blowing at that time. I often think there isn't a great deal of foresight by many.

Russell is the one player I'm disappointed that's leaving. I don't think he wanted to, I think his heart is with us. But this is professional sport and he's got to do what is best for him and it's obviously a deal we were never going to come close to.

This idea that Ryles is going to relegate every single player in the final year of their contract who signs elsewhere is nonsensical.

      • I do think you can keep Russell in the squad most weeks just as backup or cover for any injury, but I'd see how ado and Kelly look to start season. And on other edge Will and Bailey. Can always bring Russell back in if need be.

      • Agree Adam, its circumstantial and my guess is Russell would still be prominent in Ryles plans and of course how far our season goes in an end performance situation.

I think initially Brown played badley enough to be dropped last year, but Ryles stuck by him, its a fallacy if people thought that Brown was changed around in anyway but to satisfy a need for Ryles plans.

  • I always thought of Russell as your ideal outside back depth of a player.

I saw a stiff straight linish type of player good but would never be great which is fine.Players like this end up as journeyman but again that's not a blight on the player that's just who they are.I think Russell can have a long career if he looks after himself and I do wish him the best.

Kelly's an upgrade more of a specialist moreso than Russell so I think the transition at left centre will go better than most think.Physical player which is great and he's experienced enough so as above I expect him to slot right in and do his job.

  • This guy can break tackles, which we don't have a lot of in our team. We were 13th in the NRL last year. Even in '22 we were 11th best. Our highest in recent years was 2021 when we were 7th for tackle breaks. The last time we were top four in this stat was 2014 when Hayne was still at the club.

The biggest determinant for attacking success isn't movement off the ball (the magical 'attacking shapes' voodoo some fans think makes a difference) or passing, it's tackle breaking ability. The Broncos were best at this last year and the Panthers were best in three of the four years they won the comp.

    • Poupou, the Eels' attacking stats were 10th or lower across the board. I think for the Round 1 preview HOE and I will aim to graph three data sets for comparison:! attacking stats overall, attacking stats with/without Moses, and attacking stats in the last 7 or so games where the Eels appeared to 'come good'.

This might give some clues as to the direction Ryles might be going attack-wise?

      • Are the Daz pregame blogs making a comeback???

I am so here for that

        • Yep, Randy, I'll do my best. We all wait until after the team list comes out Tue arvo, but sometimes the work schedule chews up the Tue or Wed nights where some time is needed to produce a timely preview. But I'll aim for every fortnight and HOE will recruit for alt weeks I think/hope.

PS: will aim to write them to prevent 5am drop & rolls. The Randy Rule

          • It was more of a drop & splat on the back apparenty

Randy has a lot of new rules until this is sorted.... NOT HAPPY

  • Do we think Ryles might give Russell first crack at starting left centre over Kelly? Does 'loyalty' work that way in this context or is it just train and trial form?

Note that Dylbag$ kept #6 until late in the season when Top 8 had gone as a chance

"Matt Burton is my long term 6 LB. Then you are looking at Premierships. He's the seat that Pezet is warming ( I think that's the real reason they only wanted Pezet for the year?)
Our juniors at the 6 level for NRL are all perhap'sers"
