Video referees - What is the right mix?

I've been hearing a bit of a recent media push to get rid of video referees. The logic behind this is the speeding up of the game combined with the usual argument that the video referee still gets in wrong. There can be no doubt that errors are still occurring and the proponents of this idea are suggesting a return to the in-goal touch judges. It is claimed that the success of the in-goal officials at the 9s will be testimony to the validity of this move.I have a couple of thoughts about this.Firstly, any move that lessens continual interruptions to the game should be a good move. I am particularly opposed to those players laying down with an injury after a tackle, aiming to get a video review which results in a penalty. I also hate frequent reviews of obstruction plays.Conversely, any move away from a video review of a potential try would possibly result in the loss of some of the spectacular tries in the corner which almost defy belief. How many times do we watch those tries and think to ourselves, "not a chance" only to be amazed with what shows up on still frame? I can't believe that an in-goal judge would get those right most of the time. The reality is that an in-goal judge will likely make more errors judging the grounding of the ball than a video review would. From a "we was robbed" perspective, there was an incidence in the 9s where Sandow scored what was shown to be a legitimate try, only for the in-goal official to disallow it and have the opposition (Dragons?) go the length of the field and score. One review would have confirmed the try. (By the way I would never propose a video ref for a 9s competition. It is meant to be quick fire.)I think we could get the balance right by eliminating those reviews of tackles and just deal with illegalities after the game. Surely the argument about 2 pairs of eyes is more pertinent there. When we have 2 refs, let them control the flow of the game and make on the spot judgements about dangerous tackles or obstruction plays. let the video referee adjudicate on grounding issues alone, but don't eliminate the technology.Whenever we get a media driven agenda, it seems to come to fruition. I smell something cooking here.

  • I thought Warren Smith came up with a good idea whilst commentating on the 9's; Put the video refs on a "shot clock" so that they can only review the footage over a closed period of time and make a decision. Not a perfect system, but should cut down on delays and sought the chaff from the hay in majority of situations - for example, it would have confirmed the Sandow try.
    • Agree completely JBG. Sick of constant replays of incident when most people looking at it once say try or no try. Video refs appear to finding ways to disallow try rather than finding ways to allow try. If on field ref says try but there some doubt video ref only allowed to have say 20 seconds to review to make final decision.

  • Spot on.
  • How about giving the teams a limited number of challenges, for general ref stuff ups and third ref calls.Say 4 each half.Use them up too early, then it is tough titties. Also have say 10 seconds to make the call.Just like the cricket.
  • One ref, two touchies
Video ref gets three angles once at full speed and has to make a decision
People will understand errors and it is a little bit truer to the game.
  • Yes I agree Miatch. Grounding of the ball only.
  • As I understand the original concept of the video ref he was to adjudicate on whether or not a try was scored - that is the grounding of the ball, sideline, dead ball line (as has been mentioned).

He could not adjudicate on forward passes.

Then the obstruction rule came into play - and the water boy and where to park your car and...........OOPS - like the video ref I have strayed so far from the original idea it is NO longer relevant.

Also with the advent of the video ref the onfield refs have forgotten how to control a game and make onfield decisions.

The video ref should go back to the original concept and adjudicate ONLY on the scoring of a try from the grounding of the ball

Put the responsibility back on the refs to actually REFEREE the game.

Linesmen stick their flag in the air if they see the player step outside the field of play.

Refs and linesmen to CALL off side and FORWARD passes.

FFS how many forward passes do we see allowed to go without a call when the linesman or ref are right on the spot?

Referees to call try or no try unless they legitimately cannot get a clear view of the put down.

Video refs are a blight on the refs doing their job.

Refs and linesmen to be subjected to a Match Review the same as the players.

Blatant stuff ups, see them suspended for 1 - 4 weeks dependent on their mistakes and if the game was influenced by bad refereeing.

  • Here's one out of left field, let's embrace the correct decisions & who cares what it takes. Technology / tv angles always on the improve & let's face it we ain't gunna go backyards. Video refs are here to stay, all those terrific tries Sixtiesboy talks about wouldn't have been given yesteryear, don't be a dinosaur lets go with the future!
    • Good idea - just do away with ONFIELD refs all together and play NRL on a computers.

      Good call BBE

And just so you know - YES I am taking the p!ss.

  • Sweet.
