Tyrell Fuimaono

Does anyone know how he traveled in the off season? Would really love to see him step up and take over Tepai's second row spot this year in the 20's he's a monster with good potential

  • He turned in a massive performance against the Tigers (who were under strength, to be fair) in the opening trial of the season, if you check the highlight package I posted elsewhere you will see that he carved them up on our right-edge and landed a positively brutal fend to sit a defender on his backside.

I'll get my second look at him this coming Saturday against the Panthers but he should be in for a big season. I can't imagine the club wanting him to slip through their grasps but there is something of a log jam in the backrow in our NRL team (Watmough, Edwards, Ma'u, Moeroa while Pauli and Gower are also preferred as backrowers currently plus Josh Aloiai) so I wonder if the club will look to bring him into grade potentially as a centre.

He is definitely one we want to keep but I trust BA to get it sorted out and for now I look forward to his work in the Holden Cup.

    • Looks like he played some centre in that trial too.

    • Josh Aloiai is another one who i has big wraps on as well!! Would love to see him play a good year for Wenty..... how did he play the other night?

  • Fuimoano's progression will be interesting. Agree with Forty that the amount of back row options make it hard to see how we accommodate him. He did "fill in" at centre last year although I'm not sure he has the tools to become an NRL centre. We obviously have Davis who would be ahead of Tyrell on the development curve as well as a number of other options from NYC last year.
    • Honestly Steve I think it would only be a stop-gap solution in order to get him a first-grade berth if he has the sort of manager the demands first seventeen selection straight out of NYC.

He has another year beyond 2015 to run in the Holden Cup ('96 baby) and then he plays right-centre for one season assuming he can handle it which brings us to the end of 2017 where the likes of Kenny Edwards and Manu Ma'u are off-contract. The club can then make a decision if Tyrell shifts to the backrow based on who we retain and how he has performed. Of course, we might not even get that far because between now and then we could lose Pauli (2015), Gower (2016), Watmough (retirement with benefits) or even Aloiai.

Way too much guesswork involved above but in the end we have ways to get him into the team if that is a prerequisite of retaining him.

  • He'll never be big enough for the front row. He has a smaller frame than Moeroa, for example.

  • Gallen and Moa are as wide as they are tall. That's not from the gym, that's bone structure - like I said, Fuimaono's frame is too small.

Here's a photo of him running the ball: http://transform.fairfaxregional.com.au/transform/v1/crop/frm/silve...

He's a pure edge player. He'd be wasted in the middle.

  • You would be wasting plenty of his strengths by pushing into the middle plus we have other kids pushing through it that position already.

Tepai Tepu-Smith and Alex Twal aren't that far off while Tom Amone and even Cameron King are hot on their heels.

If anyone is going to push into the front row to become such a player I think it would be Pauli Pauli.

  • Fuimaono's game isn't really suited to the middle, it's suited to the edge because of his ability to beat defenders with his lines and agility rather than the bash an barge style of a middle forward. We're better off letting TTS, Twal, Amone, and Mose develop into props and their games are much more closely suited to the middle of the field.

We also have two strong props in King and Tasipale who were very good in the SG Ball yesterday. Was very impressed by King who played all but 5 minutes of the game and took about a hit-up per set and was looking good in defence. imo later on in the year he could play 5-10 games in the NYC.

  • I'd stick Moeroa in the middle before I'd move Fuimaono.

But it's all theoretical - Moeroa is a first grader whereas Fuimaono is just a promising youngster at this stage. He still might never play first grade.

We should not be seeing Pezet talking up his next gig, as that will just turn fans against him…"
