Twilight Of The "Great Coaches"

I have said on here quiet often that there is no such thing as a great coach. They don`t exist. There are coaches that are much of a muchness. Pick a coach at random and he will do much the same job as any other. Mage has been shafted,Des is well on the nose and some reports say he won't last this week. Neil Henry has already been sacked. Others are under review---such as RickyTicky Tarvey. And one should not forget Loz the NSW coach. The lines are lengthening at Centerlink!

How many times have all those coaches been described as Great Coaches? Most could not get enough of Mage when Souths won the Grand Final after many years of failure. And Des could, and did, name his own price after his Great (sic) coaching performance at Manly.(Reportedly said to be influenced by the use of cows blood!!) I don`t believe a word of it. Years ago a young Neil Henry was described as a great coach in the making by our own Peter Sterling. Allegedly he had great coaching results but never the the one that for which   we are in the NRL competition, a Grand Final win. How many on here have granted Brad Arthur the `ultimate` praise of being a great  coach? Too many to go through but one will do--"he is our saviour and our future.sic! I believe that BA`s career at Parramatta has been pested and handicaped by these stupidities--who could possibly live up to them?

  • I'd love to see the Walker Bros take on the challenge of an NRL 1st Grade team.

    • Can u remind me again what it is they do different? I remember reading an article ages ago about the different thoughts and ways they coach their team to play but I can't remember what it is now?
  • I thought Paul Langmack was a great coach .
  • SK enough said!
  • There are two types of coaches. Those that have been sacked and those that will be sacked.
  • Did anyone hear actually know Jack Gibson?
  • they play a possession based game meaning they pass/offload at will and don't worry too much about errors.  They also allow quick play the balls (which seems so strange in today's game) so that the other team doesn't have the ball for as long. ie their sets are over a lot more quickly so at the end of the game the other team has on most occasions had to do a lot more tackling..  Has merit but not for the long term in my view as most coaches will find a way to limit the impact

  • Some words are just overused Robert.
To judge a "great coach" or a "champion player" it's best to decide at the backend of their careers

"Thats a good side bem. Joash looked more confident and stronger in the trials, and his quick footwork really confused the opposition. If he's on the bench he needs to get onto the park"
