trent barrett

hey phil in response to your blog: barret tipped to become an eel, i found this on fox sports.com.au

Cronulla skipper Trent Barrett is free to play in Saturday night's match against Manly despite being charged with tripping by the NRL match review committee.

Barrett was handed a grade one charge for his 62nd-minute trip on Newcastle halfback Jarrod Mullen in Sunday's 21-10 loss to the Knights at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

But the charge attracted only a 75-point penalty, while even loading from a prior offence failed to push it beyond the 100-point mark at which a ban kicks in.

Barrett is expected to announce this week that this will be his last season in the game, his career set to end in first week of September with the Sharks unlikely to feature in the finals series.

The Sharks have won only five of 16 games this season, and would need to win seven of their last eight matches to be any hope of qualifying for the finals.

the second last paragraph stresses he will be retiring?

  • Who do you believe more, an article that means nothing written by anyone or a person that has sources within the club?
Even so, it says EXPECTED in that paragraph not confirmed.
  • no1 until i c it myself
  • Mate, I don't know. I haven't been able to able to get a second source yet to confirm it, so until that happens I'm going to reserve judgement. All I'm putting on record definitely is that we were definitely talking to his management late last week.

This is an AAP report - this may sound like a strange thing to say but I'd be more inclined to believe it if it came out of the Tele because they have better access to inside information than AAP.
  • I wouldn't be getting Barrett to sign any contract just yet. Apparently Inglis has rejected the Broncos offer and will STAY with the Storm. That says to me that Cronk will have to be offloaded becasue the Storm surely cannot keep all 4 and they're not going to let Slater or Smith go. Cronk may very well be on the market soon....

  • Australian Associated Press. They are what's called a wire service, so they write up your run-of-the-mill news and then its syndicated to their clients which includes News Ltd and Fairfax so if you see a story that runs across a bunch of the sites, it's almost always an AAP story. They do sometimes break stuff, but they're remit is basically to write stuff that fills holes in websites and newspapers.
  • I hope it's true. However it was reported yesterday that Barrett has just purchased a house in his home town of Temora and we was telling all in the NSW camp that he was moving back there. Let's hope he has had a change of heart.
