Thoughts of 2016 so far (half way mark)

1. Foran, sad end to the year. And honestly, it couldn't of come at a better time, do not let him do any more damage and let him keep playing while dealing with depression. Let him out of the stardom for 6 months and not have the burdon that he should be out there playing. Though everyone is calling him a bust and that he had 1 good play, honestly he was fantastic til that Canterbury game where the depression started. Granted only 8 games but just pure unlucky that it happened, not his ability. He played better in 8 games than 20 halves in 10 years did combined. Now Tepai Moeroa, what's everyone's opinion??? In 2014, start of 2015 I loved the guy, was touting him to play origin and everything. And now he's just average. When he burst onto the scene, all that people raved about was his defence and I thought "no way his attack outweighs his defence". But now that's all he has. He seems one dimensional in attack and goes down without a fight taking it up, though he does keep playing after knocks and defensive work rate is through the roof. Though when he's out you don't notice him gone. I'm on the fence as to whether I'd pick him if I was coaching the team. What's everyone's opinion as we do have guys who could play same lock role as him.

  • Hi mate, Foz's depression didn't just happen, what we saw was a bloke who couldn't cope anymore with it, he had done a good job at putting a brave face up, depression is usually the result of a long drawn out period of not feeling the best for what ever reason, its not the sort of thing you just get one weekend although one might have a realisation they are suffering depression in a moment, some people can be depressed their entire lives and not actually know it, it never occurs to some people that there is any other way to feel.

Agree he really needed the rest of the year off, he shouldn't have come back so early imo his injury was a blessing for him.

I agree on Tep, great defender but a real one dimensional player these days, he shows signs of quality but the jury is out there, his progress in attack seems non existent, I'm not too sure what to think with him but I'm still backing him to develop the rest of his game

    • My opinion with tep is that he hasn't so much gone backwards, rather has stayed at the same level he was at. The reason it seems to some that he has lost something, is more to do with the fact others have improved around him. Mau and edwards over the last two years have both developed into destructive runners with great offloads. Mau and Scott have both got that mongrel in defence and never say die attitude that we first saw from tep. So its more a combination of the workload being spread amongst others, and those others improving out of sight rather than tep actually going backwards.
  • Great season , having a blast .
  • The move to the middle is taking some time for Tep to adjust, we have remember he's still just 20.

He'll get there though he's too good not too.

  • my opinion taking away the distractions, the possible loss of points we sit on 16 points going into tonights game, & sitting I 5th spot, how long has it been at this point of the year we have that many points & position.  We win tonight & next week we have 20 points, how good is that?

Sure we are going to lose 12, but even after that, with two more wins tonight & next week, plus another bye & we stit on 10 points.  For me its a positive, either way, how many others are in worse positions & they have not had the drama's that hang around them don't have the media out after them like blow flies around fresh dripped cow pats.

While it may get worse with the deductions it will get better with decent new board & CEO, & we can only build upon a season of what was, & ATM we still have the chance to be in the top 8.

    • Now that's the spirit!!

Dr Timothy Sharp would be vey impressed lol

  • Dr. Timothy Leary would say, "supporting the Eels, now that's a real trip".
  • If we're only talking Tep and Foran...
    2. Tep: is BA grooming him to transition to prop? At least, a Gallen-style prop/lock role of sticking to the middle? It seems along the way we have lost his strong edge defense and running game. Currently not sure if Tep is headed in the right direction but hopefull BA knows what he's doing.
    1. Foran: a bust this year. We paid too much, because you should not pay that much for a basket case. Foran's play is beyond reproach, I think: makes our right edge tough to crack, good game management, showed he has a running game, unselfish playmaker. But we paid for a leader on AND off the field, and off the field he has been a basket case. It's not enough just to cite depression and pretend that gives him a free pass, because that overlooks the question of his own degree of culpability in his fate. And it's obvious he had a hand in that, if you care to bypass one eyed defenses. Overall, to pay that much money for someone without his s**t together was a big risk, and this year we have paid the price. Hopefully he gets it together and repays the investment. Apologies for not toeing the party line (which trots out the depression line as a means to avoid asking tough questions)
    • From a business perspective, I agree with you.

From an emotional one, I don't.

Given the issues young rugby league players have with depression, in particular suicides in U20s, I think the NRL should have made a statement saying they would give us dispensation for Foran's salary to allow both the business and emotional sides to be satisfied.
    • Peyote, I think allowing salary cap dispensation for depression would open a can of worms for rorting. And applied to Foran, he may be depressed but he also appears to have made the bed he's now stuck in. We should be a bit more cautious about the use of depression as a public shield for poor life choices that came with consequences. Besides, I'm still not sold on emotions as an excuse. There are many occupations where the pay is tied to the expectation that you do your job regardless of personal
issues. At a certain point, the pay is large enough to stow it.
