Why they have this access I have no idea .
Looks like George Orwell was only out by 40 or 50 years, Big brother has well and truely arrived.

George Orwell ????????????
In background of gmail and other accounts there is back up, which includes full history including location if phone has GPS. I showed my wife and she was amazed I could see her browsing history and locations visited from years ago.
I don't have facebook or social media but you don't need them to share details.
Nearly every app you download on your phone has different permissions. Look in background and you will see popular games downloaded by millions has access to your location, address book pictures, and other parts of information there is no need for game developers to have. This is because information can be sold to other businesses. By downloading game you automatically agree to this.
With a lot of paperwork now done by computer and email all the ID documents are held by big companies as well so what is proposed here is not to different to what businesses have.
What it will stop is identify theft and also help in catching criminals (not that Aussie courts will punish them anyway).
But what of need to ask is what is information going be used for. If done nothing majorly wrong or on police watch list you have nothing to worry about. There are billions of people on earth so why would companies or govts look at you
For companies it is to simply to gather information to target and direct market their product.
Every website logs IP addresses. My personal website will log your IP if you go there as does Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. It's an inbuilt function that allows the website to load pages, images, files and so on. Without it you can't view content as there's no delivery address for that content to be delivered to.
Your IP address changes periodically and is attached to your router. So I don't know what your PC's IP address is but I would know your router's IP if you don't have a VPN.
Phil changes mods and admins on this place without telling anyone and I can't see a section that keeps us updated on who has access to what , so again , as someone who's previously shared your opinion on privacy laws and metadata stuff , do you think it's acceptable that we are in the dark as to who's seeing what when we log in here ? And I'm not just talking about you giving me a quick rundown on what you can and can't do and how your personal website does this or that , I'm talking about the fact it's not shown anywhere on the page permanently who's able to see my details . Surely you'd be totally against this given your stance on the topic ?
Only full site admins can access IP addresses. Your general mod who deletes or edits comments or moderates chat can't see it. IP addresses allow us to block those specific addresses. So when we banned Sinners, we banned his IP. I can pretty much do nothing with your IP address.
Don't conflate my opposition to governments storing years of your metadata for my views on web access. I see logging of IP with website admins as commonplace. It happens on every site. I'm ok with it. If I delete my account there, it's no longer easily accessible. Same with this site, once you delete your account, I can no longer see your IP address.
Metadata storage crosses into breach of privacy as they can see my entire internet history and every site I've visited on the web. I can't do that with your IP
In short, the only function it has on this site is so you can actually access the site and so we can block an IP if required.
Have you asked the same questions of every single other website you've visited?
