I would of rated good ole Ron Hilditch at Hooker before Brad Drew. "Steve Edge had no vision " piffle. He would be my number one hooker, played in 12 grandfinals in all grades, winning 5 first grade grandfinals. He'll do me.

I cannot stand these sort of articles, as how on earth can many of the great players be seperated especially as to the era/time frame they played in?? 63 seasons and one gets to pick the best team from how many great players?
Hayne vses Ken Thornett. Having seen both play, and least number of games of the mayors I would pick the Mayor over Hayne, however when the mayor returned for a swansong year he was not as good but he did pick the team up and this after an absence of 2 years out of the game. Hayne was a great player but did he own the #1 jersey for the eels as against The mayor, who was more consistent in his play overall.
In the same vein, while Semi was a great winger for the club and played solely as a winger, I would actually have Hayne in place of Semi, even there that is a hard choice as the eels did have some great wingers over the years, but given his club, international, SOO along with playing for Fiji, Semi's home country.
No place for Ron Lynch shows how little todays guru's know or saw him play? Sure the likes of Hindmarsh never gave up in a game but Thirsty for me played with more class, along with his ball play, hard nosed running.
For me, to pick the best team ever, does no credit to the club, even the players named, but for me even replacing those chosen with any number of other class players does not really help their history and input to the club, team and supporters from 1947 onwards.
In fact for me, creating teams of each decade especially in the latter years may be better to show the many quality and best players of those times than the best ever without demeaning the many who deserve recognition as to their playing abilities.
There are a few in the forward pack I would change. I would swap Jason Smith for Ray Higgs in the second row, and Edge for Drew. Edgy was a great leader, so he would be my captain. I wasn't old enough to see Ken Thornett, so I am happy with the rest of the backline
"See the issue is what and who are we replacing DB with and the same goes for Lomax they've had over half a season to come up with a replacement for the first mentioned nd they've taken a guy whose using us as a stepping stone so in all essence there…"

I heard Sterlo say edge lacked vision and didn't move that well as a player .
Cayless, Drew, Hindmarsh and Jason Smith wouldnt have been in my top 13. The rest are great. Thornett bros didnt get any mention ??
Hindmarsh has to be IMO, as is Jason Smith.

Fair team but Peter Wynn's gotta be in it.
Wynn and Crusher Cleal were the best tackle busting 2nd rowers of their era.
The try Wynn scored in the Panasonic Cup final in 1986 was one of the best.
