Interesting sideline in those observations Adam, he sort of implies he was a "failed coach" and so one of the takeaways is that being a top coach in itself doesn't mean your are a top "recruiter" or vice versa......after all those coaches came to him to find players, not soley but singularly as opportunities arose. Bennett's exercise with the Dolphin's being an exception (new club/clean sheet).
In summary, people skills and judgement are his key ingredients. Gould maybe an exception, but I am not sure on the people skills, plenty of cunning, notwithstanding.
Persuasiveness is the key ingredient in Parra's case, mostly you can't teach judgement, only learn by mistakes to enhance same.
This is who we miss and potentially if we had have landed Bennett instead of JR OSullivan could have been our recruitment manager.
That Rotorua carnival I mentioned on here at the beginning of the year and if we had any representatives at this tournament.OSullivan obviously was there and seemingly he's every where.
I laughed when the recruitment by committee was laughed off and his finger prints are not just FG but throughout the club.
Parra need this guy onboard or someone similar.Very experienced and his body of work is unquestioned.I don't know what we have going on here but it needs to be upgraded.
For sure mate, I've stated previously that I'm quite satisfied with where we are heading in terms of recruitment and retention. Plenty of the right calls are being made, not everything has gone our way but that's to be expected. We've got cap space next year so we've got options and we've got a roster that's on the improve. I'm hoping our season follows the same upwards trajectory it did last year then we've got some tough decisions to make about who we keep and who we bring in. It's understated how important it is to be able to choose, to have options, rather than be forced into a poor decision due to constraints. We're going ok, I just posted the clip because there had been so much talk about this guy and it's good to put a face to the name.
The key comment he cares not what anyone thinks and isn't influenced and backs his own ability.
All I'm watching the last 5 odd years is every club he's been at recruitment and there fortunes have improved. All the rest is just noise. We need something because what we have isn't it.
Adam, Thanks for this blog and sharing this great interview with Peter O'Sullivan. Really enjoyed it.
Coryn, personally, although I respect him, I'm not a believer in Miracle Messiah saviours unless it's a big-shot multi-billionaire Parra Person who landed in from the clouds with the friendly aliens from Disclosure Day.
You've also made very broad brush statements, without showing the specifics and details which actually paint a different picture.
Would Sully be great at Parra? Potentially.
Optics wise. For Fans. For Hope. For a sugar hit. Absolutely.
Also, he's got a "big name", good people skills and is matey with a lot of agents. All ticks. Remember the Orr camp wanted to throw a Dylan Brown-Drinkwater package his way at the Dolphins because O'Sullivan was missing out on many big names and needed a marquee desperately. You'd be pinning your hopes on agents putting Sully before their own clients. Possibly. Sometimes. But don't count on it. And when you're doing deals with agents, you're usually taking the good with the bad. Not every signing becomes a winner.
TPAs wouldn't be an issue like it used to be as our CEO and club have stabilized themselves and proved their respectability among sponsors and key stakeholders. Unless we implode, which we shouldn't unless the club listens to fans (sack, sack, sack), then third parties might steer clear of us again.
Would he alone make Parra Great Again? Highly unlikely.
He doesn't like committees like us or the Panthers have. He likes a 1-2 man show.
He also doesn't like getting over-ruled by coaches as a general rule which he'd face at Parra. He'd "back himself" every time and fight tooth and nail if he has to. But regardless, it's Ryles' call every time.
Dolphins are still signing marquees like Cobbo without him.
The Storm won premierships before and after Sullivan. They still do and did Storm things without him for decades. So too the Roosters. To suggest one man is making clubs successful is naive.
Even at the Warriors — after he was also sacked by the Roosters and dereigstered for a few years dodgy connections and financial dealings with notorious punter and former brothel owner Eddie Hayson — they made the finals once when he was there. The Warriors had success under Ivan Cleary and Andrew Webster (both good coaches) — when Sullivan wasn't there.
He admits he missed out on a lot of names and makes mistakes. He's not perfect.
The Knights still got the wooden spoon with him as the head of recruitment since mid-2024. This year, the Knights have benefited from good coaching in Holbrook, I'd add.
Sullivan's signings since mid-2024 at the Knights.
Ugly or Hit-and-miss:
■ Jakob Arthur
■ Matthew Arthur
■ Paul Bryan (played Knights Cup for two years before moving onto Manly Cup reggies).
■ Francis Manuleleua (24 reserve games, 4 NRL games last two years)
■ Tyrone Thompson (26) - Peter O’Sullivan specifically described him as an elite New Zealand rugby union pathways player when Newcastle signed him. 3 games 33mins, 15mins, 16 mins R6-8, last two years.
■ James Schiller (he’s been playing mostly reserves this year, and made a mountain of mistakes in his only NRL game this year in their 12-44 Loss to the Panthers)
■ Peter Hola (7 reserve games, 1 NRL 12 min off bench in Knights 38-24 loss to the Roosters)
Lost:
■ Tom Jenkins (potential Origin rep)
■ Leo Thomson (NZ rep)
■ Gehamat Shibasaki (Origin rep)
■ Kai Pearce Paul (England rep)
■ Tyson Gamble
■ Adam Elliot
■ Jackson Hastings
■ Jayden Brailey
■ Jack Hetherington
■ Starford To’a
Good recruits:
■ Dom Young (former Knight)
■ Dylan Brown (costing $13m-$14m).
■ Trey Mooney (plucked from Raiders reserves)
■ Harrison Graham bench
It's mixed. Dylan cost a fortune no other club was willing to come near. Has he unearthed the next Inglis, who wasn’t even listening to Sully talk, or Manu?
If we ADD all his Knights recruits and REMOVE ours since Ryles came in — release Iongi, Jack Williams, Teancum Brown, Dylan Walker, Kautiga, Samrani, Joash, Talyn Da Silva, the Fox, Jayd Su’a, Harrison Edwards — are we much better and a title contender?
Do not misunderstand: I'd support his hiring. He is a good operator. The Biggest Name in Recruitment, like a Gus Gould. I would hire him. I respect him. I just don't believe one bloke fixes everything. The club still needs to "all" pull in One Direction, and not get undermined by noise.
Memo to Eels fans: Don't expect miracles. Even if Sullivan was here, we will need years of patience and even a few wooden spoons.
