The major hurdle to stadium upgrades

When the Olympic Stadium (now called ANZ Stadium) was built in the late 1990s by private investors, a "material adverse effect" clause was put in place. In simple terms, it prevents another stadium being built within a 50km radius, of 48,000 seats or more, with further restrictions on corporate areas and roofing. That clause has for more than a decade restrained Sydney from having the stadiums it desperately needs. The government could take it on, and build the new stadiums anyway, and battle it out in the courts. In recent months, though, negotiations between the SCG Trust - the government body that operates the SCG and Allianz Stadium - and Stadium Australia Group have been fruitful."Taken from : http://m.smh.com.au/sport/major-codes-frustrated-over-stadium-policy--but-change-is-coming-20150619-ghsccv.html------I'm not sure if that clause had a sunset period or not. Either way it is pretty clear the lengths the government at the time went to, to secure the Olympics and get things built. Many people thought home bush would be a white elephant after the Olympics, but did they ever think it would affect every other er stadium in Sydney?

  • One of the options for the stadium upgrades is to pay out the Stadium Australia operators for the rest of their contract to get rid of the requirements set in the original contract. The NSW budget will be delivered next week I believe. This will be when we find out which stadiums will get funding for upgrades and how much.
  • Watching the game last night, I can't believe Manly are still playing at an oval. Tigers likewise with Leichhardt. Stadiums are the future, suburban grounds should be a thing from the past. The Bulldogs gave away Belmore and rightly so.
  • Unbelievable, it doesnt sound like a very fair clause to have for everybody else in Sydney.

  • Still playing games on that cow paddock called Brookvale is an absolute embarrassment.

  • That was an interesting bit of the article.  Explains a lot, and how we got a 100K stadium built by anyone in time for 2000, when they knew they'd have to reduce the capacity down to 80K straight after.

I've read somewhere that the state budget won't contain any announcement about future stadium funding etc, and that any announcement about those things will come about three months later...? Not sure of the reason, but there was some reason it wasn't going to be part of the Budget bills, and will be taken to state parliament seperately when the time comes?
