The Importance of Staying Strong

As supporters, our emotions are deeply attached to the successes of our Eels. When the team wins, life seems that little bit better. We devour the media in search of all things Parramatta. When the team loses, the following days are miserable. All is wrong with the world and we look for someone to blame.Right at this moment we face our greatest challenge. The on-field results are not ideal but they are not far off. The team is probably one win off a pass mark at round 8. Injuries have had an impact on performances, but the football staff would not use that as an excuse. They expect better from the team too and with significant players returning to the squad in the next two rounds, improved results will follow. Nonetheless, the challenge as a supporter is seeing beyond a round 8 placing on the table and recognising what lies ahead. Before the next NRL round is completed, the PLC elections will be held. Make no mistake, challengers to the current board will refer to the current table position of the Eels as part of their propaganda. They will include popular past players on their ticket. They will make promises about returning the Eels to past glory days. They will advocate for change to achieve this. This will appeal to the emotions of supporters who want a change from the current table position. So why should we resist this change? Why do we need to stay strong and continue on the path with our current board?Firstly, a board change will have no impact on the current table position of the Eels. This year is already in process and it is far from over. Furthermore, significant signings, including Foran and Scott, have already been made for next year, with more signings to come. Without doubt, the Eels are on an upward trajectory which must not be interrupted.Secondly, a board change would most likely have an adverse effect on club staffing and future developments.Let's consider what has been achieved by the current board and what lies ahead under their leadership:* the best financial result in over a decade – a $12.5m Leagues Club profit* improvement of nearly $2m in NRL Football operations from a $7.5m loss in 2013 to $5.6m in 2014 - resulting in the first reduction of the NRL grant from the Leagues club since 2010* plans for a $100m entertainment precinct between Parramatta Leagues Club and Pirtek Stadium* A new High Performance Centre at Old Saleyards Reserve at North Parramatta for our team with Stage 1 already completed. There are great times ahead for this club. The challenge for supporters who are club members is to stay strong. If you want the Eels to grow as a team and have a strong financial base created by a board which places good governance and dedication to the putting the club first high on its priorities, you must throw your weight and vote behind Steve Sharp and his board. To do anything else will put Our Eels back on the merry-go-round of a club without direction.Stay strong everyone. We all love our Parramatta Eels. Times are changing and our fortunes are improving. The future lies in your hands. Let's help Steve Sharp and his team to achieve their goals, which ultimately are our goals too.

  • I skimmed and gleaned this was politics not footy. But then I also remembered Parra politics spins it's wheels just as idly as does Parra footy. Sadly, the two have merged.
    • Hi Prof. People know what a footy tragic I am. The last thing that I ever want to be involved in is politics. However, the vibe of discontent evident at the moment leads me to fear a backlash vote. The future is bright, both football wise and club wise. This season will pan out with much better results. Next year will be brilliant. A change of the board could jeopardise that. We can't let temporary disappointment derail the board.
    • Well said Prof. Seems politics and back room agendas have overwhelmed this once great club and consistent performances on the field are nothing more than the lingering hopes of diehard fans.

  • This is a really important period that will dictate our club's future.
  • Thanks Poppa. I am concerned that people will confuse a temporary table position with our club's overall future.
  • The smart ones won't but the problem is not every parra supporter has half a brain and they will be the ones who are easy targets .....:-((
    • So the important job lies with people to spread the facts.
  • Honestly 60s i want to stay strong but for the 1st time in 20+ years of fanatic support of the eels I've been through the 90s the smith years and more but now i just don't care any more I'm giving serious thought to handing back my membership I'm ignoring the next election cause it will be most likely another unprofessional political circus.
    • The danger with that is it would most likely hand control to a rebel ticket. These tickets will have allegiances with a couple of previous boards. They would not have put a ticket forward without having a certain number of guaranteed votes. If any supporter who can vote decides to walk away from having a say, they may literally be voting to oust Sharp.
    • I'm not able to vote as i didn't join the renew my leagues club membership because i live outside the area.
My post was more about my disenchantment with the club both on and off field i think sharpie and his team are doing fine but the usual crap will continue to go on further disabling the team/club

"Some players need to get sacked from a club and risk losing it all before they really knuckle down and put in the work.  Why did he get sacked, was it lack of discipline for footy and training or off field issues?"
