The career of Bevan French has become very devicive this year in terms of his size, strength and overall ability to be able to cut it in first grade.Cast yourself back to the late 90's, early 2000's and a young kid who would go on to become the highest try scorer in Eels history faced the same challenges.Luke Burt, was the most dominate player in the NSW junior competitions. From Harold Matthews all the way through to Jersey Flegg, it was never a matter of if Burt would make it but more about when that would happen. Now without going into all the details, Burt went on to be a very capable first grader and at one stage was talked about as an Origin fullback.NOw similar in talent, build and ability, the main difference in that Luke had the drive and desire to get better and do so in that he would do what was best for the team. When a young Jarryd Hayne came onto the seen and the then fullback Burt was asked to move back to the wing he did it with no fuss.I keep hearing that Bevan wants to play fullback, that Bevan wants to leave if he cant play fullback but thats not how a team works. In the latest interview on NRL.com, he admitted that his for is sub-par yet we wtill here that he will walk out on Parramatta to be a fullback, should any team be foolish enough to give him a shot at this stage in his career and with his current form.I get that football is now a business, and i more than most support the team and not the players in that i dont care who wears the jersey, especially if they can win us a GF.So to Bevan, do be like Val, do whats right for the team, and who knows what will happen. Being a first grade winger is still far better than answering phones or digging ditches for a living

  • The game has changed since the Luke Burt era. Wingers are more solidly built and must take the load off the forwards with dominant hit ups in the first few tackes.

Burt would have problems at his size as French is having at the moment.
  • Burt would never make it in the game today. Size matters now far more than it did back then.

    • I hear what you are saying but i disagree. Once upon a time you needed to be a ball player to play lock, now its like an extra frf. If he plays smart he can be good enough
      • The game has changed too much. He would get dominated from kick returns and also under the high ball. Credit to Bev he is okay catching bombs but gets man handled everywhere else. Look at all the best wingers in the comp right now. They are all tall, athletic, and powerful. Bev is none of these.

    • I also disagree there is plenty of smaller players in the nrl who have been relatively successful here’s a few of the top of my head but sure there is more
      Matt dufty
      Luke keary
      Dylan Edwards
      Billy slater
      Aj brimson
      Adam Reynolds
      Damion cook
      Michael Gordon
  • the only problem is he cant play winger as well... hes a player that would of been excellent from the 80s - 2000s era... the game has changed and there is no such thing as a great small winger... all the other teams have average to strong physical wingers, we are always the last team in the comp to realise how the comp is changing, in almost every aspect of the new era including forward rotation, building a strong culture, have the correct type of people in charge, etc etc... we a team still playing in the early 2000's, whilst most teams are years ahead of us.

  • Agree, good blog, never a fan of Burt here, in fact i hated seeing him run out for us but to his credit he was a much more complete player than Bev, much more of a team player and he had vision for those around him which Bev doesnt have.

He could also kick goals and had a great tactical mind.

Burty hurt us big time when it mattered, look no further than the knights GF, he was exploited and walked over like i told anybody who would listen that it would happen.

Just like will happen to bev when it matters, its already happening.

If you are going to be on the small side you need to be in the halves unless you are a freak like slater who has a very good all round game and hes very strong for his size unlike Bev.

  • I struggle to call Burt a great. In fact I think he slightly underachieved in terms of the big wraps he had on him when he was blooded initially as a centre. I think his size though was always an issue from the outset. He had to move quickly from centre and he was then never really a fixture in the side under Brian Smith he was always in and out. Became more of a permanent fixture in the team after Smith
  • AFL trainer ruined his career
  • No place for small wingers? What about ado Carr and gagai??
