Look, I like ryles, and think he will succeed at the eels, but can't help thinking what could have been if we had got him.

How long has Holbrook been at the Knights? Shows with the right people in charge it doesn't have to be a 5 year plan. They have put together a great squad, and are getting the rewards with a good coach. It'd be interesting to see what Ryles has if we can ever assemble a half decent roster
I wouldn't even say a great squad was put together. Only Mooney and Brown were added and both haven't played finals. Holbrook has made good on what he has.
Paul Kent said yesterday on his show with Q&A, that if a coach says "I need three years to clean out the roster" do not hire them. I can see his point. But if we get Leniu and perhaps another Centre, Ryles at least then has something. Young kids as well getting a year older.
When you think about it logically Kent is spot on. Even with the worst roster , you should see significant changes if a coach is worth their wage. Not spoon to GF change, but significant improvements.
All those coaches asking for time , have just been put on notice lol . What we've seen at Newcastle are a club buying in attitude wise to a coach they want to win and play for. No crap about their 1.3 million man being injured so they get a free pass for not winning like Ryles does without Moses , no Sandon Smith " needs time to Gel with the new team " like Peasant did at seasons start when he played like a busted arse . We scoffed at Sandon Smith and Newy through him a bone, and then we go and hire Ryles mate for a year instead , whilst Sandon plays better all year than not only peasant , but he's been better than our own 1.3 million man , Moses.
Have you seen Holbrook once since he got injured , talk about Dylan Brown ? No , however we harp on and on and on about Moses being out , that's our mindset vs a team getting it done. Last night showed what can be done if you aren't perennial losers and it starts from the top .
We have been trying to mimmick Melbournes blueprint for years , we've wanted their players we've wanted their coaches , we've wanted their style , the problem is we've never had the NRL support they have , or the ability to stay relatively out of the media limelight when we wish to.
Newcastle are embracing the limelight , Justin's riding it like a Cup jockey , he's got the twin and the NRL onboard and the players are responding. He's using the city's emotions to drive the players and has all season. Twice this season I've been up to Newy and the vibes been there quietly bubbling away , they didn't think they were getting here , but they were all proud and pumped with where they are heading.
I remember I wrote in 2022 how unimpressed with Parra and the Parra council I was in the GF week with our engagement with the GF . Visited the club and there was like one bunch of balloons in the foyer , it was bland as fuck and I think I saw zero street activity , although someone on here did correct me that there was one or two streets in the CBD with some Eels banners up . Lol. This is the difference . Our fans didn't demand more , and our club leaders did not buy in. When I say we didn't demand more , my point is , we were content punting the coach post 2022 and didn't look at he bigger picture regarding the whole culture and DNA . Newcastle have performed open heart surgery up there . Its the belief that's changed. We can't get that , bevause we have bums who whenever we get a little bit of belief we come out and lose to the wooden spooners. Thats on Ryles and his staff, and that's on MON and co for letting this shit be ok for far too long . Holding ground with flops like Paulo is one of the small steps in righting this , ditto putting Moses on notice. You want players with Sandon Smith attitudes , Not Paulo or sooky boy Mitch's . Now you obviously can't go punting every player, but you do need to find out how to change their attitudes .

One point on our man Moses, they lost Dyllan but they still had Kaylan Ponga, who in terms of ability would rank just about top 3 in player skill in the game, Moses would be lucky to make top 20 on the skill factor, not there is anything wrong with that top 20 is a good achievement. Dyllan Brown would be in the same grouping.....if you want to go back to Sandon Smith, you may remember that I would have grabbed him from Roosters the previous year, in saying that Sandon would not be in the top 100 on those ratings, but importantly for him and his team he was 1or 2 on the day and he was playing against the best in the world in that process, albeit with a broken leg.
Yes they still had Ponga , which is why for a hundred years it seems , I have harped on about us needing to fuck off overpaid ageing flops on Million dollar contracts , and go out and recruit one or two expensive recruits with the winning culture and attitude . But we keep hearing about how we are a development club and ( insert yet another young Eels player that's only rated highly by the usual Eels blinded fans here ) and upgrading these dopes instead of going balls deep for someone who can be a circuit breaker. Hence why , albeit only a 50/50 flip of the coin, a player like Luai could actually click with Moses and it only takes one season where we bust into the 8 and all of a sudden we have a little bit of light . It's not the same method , but may bring the same result.
But yes , we need more stars in our side and that's done with recruitment in our situation. Ryles ain't Ivan Cleary , Ivan has decades of experience so we ain't developing a GF squad like people dream we are doing.

The three of you are justified in those comments, (Bear, Trent and TT) but underneath that shallowness there some good points as Holbrook has a history with us and as Wiz will tell you, he always had the makings of a good coach. In saying that I would have rated him no differently if he "bowed" out yesterday with this side, I would still regard him highly.
I believe the Knights have "buckleys" in beating the Roosters next week, so the fairy tale will end, just like BA....but Holbrook is a lot smarter than BA, good soldier that he was!
