I really thought last year we started the year with many of our players looking very unfit and compared to teams like the Roosters and storm we looked about 10-15% off the pace all year imo.

A few of our forwards looked very out of shape too early on, they looked sloppy, Even Corey looked very unfit for more than half the season, he was blowing hard after the first 5 minutes every game with his hands on his knees.

Many of us called we looked unfit early on in the year but we were assured by those who watch training that it was the toughest preseason we'd had under Ron and we were very fit.

Theres a reason why Ron Palmer only lasts a year at every club he goes too these days.

Weve got a new S&C coach with an AFL background this year (GWS), will be interesting to see how we go in comparison to last year.

To prove just how far we were off the pace last year, i'll tip we are going to be a lot fitter this year and its going to be very noticeable, i think our fitness levels will improve at least 10%, we'll look sharper on the field and we have to be.

I heard Bev say the other day that he feels 'so much fitter than last year' under the new system, i realise they say that every year but i think there may be something legit about it this year.

Were we a bit off the pace fitness wise last year?

Will we get fitter this year?

Anybody have any thoughts on our new S&C man Lachlan Wilmont?

How will his AFL strength and Conditioning background transition to the NRL,  id guess they'd be very different?

    • Will be interesting to see how it goes injury wise, the type of training a club does can no doubt impact positively or negatively on a team injury wise, im sure NRL and AFL strength and conditioning is quite different, id be interested in what aspects hes changed for an NRL team.

Ill be very surprised if we come out as sluggish as last year, we need more spring in our step and more intensity this year, gotta find that extra 10%.

    • Mack I had the same fears given there are different fitness requirements for NRL and AFL however given his formal training you would have to imagine that he is equipped to train any type of athlete

      Time will tell I guess
    • Again from the interview with Bevan he mentioned one thing that had changed was that the Lake Gillawarna run used to be an annual event. It is now done once a week
  • If you look at Alvaro and Edwards they both look trimmer and fitter than last year

The proof of the pudding will be how Vave turns out he was never fit last year at any stage

The Trainer Lachlan Wilmott came from GWS and according to what I have read he is very technical given his training and background. I read in the paper that GWS were disappointed to lose him.

Not only did Bevan say he was fitter he also said a few of the blokes were fitter under the new training

    • I think theres a huge relationship there tad, it has a huge knock on effect on the park, not just physically but mentally too.

  • Agree there John, but experience in a game counts for a lot, hes going to be learning a lot on the job, seeing how his system translates onto an NRL park, but i suppose everybody learns on the job.

I dont think its possible to go backwards from last year fitness wise.

  • The other issue with teams who have poor fitness levels is that they fatigue quicker which effects their decision making
    • I would agree with that. They start falling off tackles
  • Remember this issue very well and was commenting on it early in the season. Will be interesting to see how fit our boys will be during the coming first 3 rounds. Our fitness did improve towards the end of last season but our weekly consistency was flawed. In the semi's, the way we matched and regularly got on top of the Melbourne Storm for large chunks of the 80 minutes was impressive but then we were lackluster the following week against the Cowgirls.

Am keen to see this on and off issue finally fixed. The problem began around the time when 3P wanted Daniel Anderson sacked and its been happening ever since.

During the famous late 2009 season run into the finals, our squad was up for it, week in, week out and fell a bit flat in patches during the grand final. It gradually got worse from then onwards.

As to why, there are so many factors at play with the pendulum swinging from the extremes of mismanagement to the extremes of conspiracies so maybe the real reason is found in the culture being crucified consistently by those causing the pendulum to swing so dramatically.

Given what our cub has been through since 3P appeared, concluding with the 2016 cap fiasco and its effects rolling on into the 2017 season, if our club is really on the mend then we should see some massive changes in attitudes this season, particularly from round 1. Let's wait and see bro.
