Melbourne Storm has been “mixing things up” for Jason Ryles who could take over Parramatta armed with skills beyond the coaches box if he was the man to replace Brad Arthur.

Ryles is one of the names strongly being linked to the Eels, who have formed a committee led by chief executive Jim Sarantinos to find the next coach after Arthur, who had previously been an assistant to Craig Bellamy in Melbourne, was axed after a massive loss to the Storm in Brisbane last weekend.

Having been lured back to Storm where he finished his playing career to potentially succeed Bellamy, Ryles has been left in limbo after the master coach agreed to go on for a staggering 23rd season in 2025.

Ryles has compiled a significant coaching resume, having worked for the Wallabies and under England coach Eddie Jones in rugby and with Trent Robinson at the Sydney Roosters before returning to Melbourne.

Bellamy said the 45-year-old would go with his blessing, and a few new skills, should the Eels come calling.

“We don’t want him to go but it’s not very often that you get those sort of opportunities so if he wanted to go I wouldn’t imagine we would stand in his way,” Bellamy said on Wednesday.

“He’s doing a really good job for us.

“He’s doing some defence with our ruck but he’s also taken on the role as leadership coach and a bit in recruitment. We’re mixing things up for him.”

Bellamy said he would reach out to Arthur in the coming days after what he suggested was a “tough call” convinced he would land at another club.

“I’m sure he will find another club - he’s a good coach and really good person so he will find another job,“ Bellamy said.

  • No thanks Bellamy - you can keep him.

  • He'd be great for us. Coming out of the storm system hopefully he can fix our defence and get us fit.

Also if storm want him to succeed bellyache he must be pretty good

    • Kearney and BA were also Storm coaches ... they didn't help our defence much.

    • Kearney and Arthur both came out of the Storm system and look how they turned out.

      Big no to Ryles.

    • I hope you're taking the piss Bradley ?

  • What does that tell you about how good Ryles is .  They're happy to see him go even though he was supposed to take over from Bellamy . If he was that good , they'd be ensuring there was a succession plan for him.  He's a bone head who the media have jumped on , just because .  Hes actually acheived and done nothing as a coach , ever.  We will look very silly hiring him when he proves to be just another Barrett and we've punted a coach that was far more experienced . I'd rather a coach that could t win a comp , yet we weren't the laughing stock over a rookie useless cunt that can't win a game.

Who was the last rookie coach to win a premiership ?  If we take on Ryles , be prepared for another era of not winning shit. The bloke hasn't even been the head coach of a Superleague team on his own.

If we hire Ryles we are fucking morons right back where we were when we hired Kearney .

    • 100000%

    • I don't think they would be building up his skills if they thought he wasn't up to being their successor. I do believe however that Slater will be Bellamy's successor, so that's why they are happy to see Ryles go. They know they can't afford to pay him head coach money as an assistant.

The interesting point however is how come Parra can't produce these types of successors? We need to get to the stage where clubs come hunting for our assistants if we won't be using them as Head Coach.

      • We need to be successful for that to happen...

"Spot on Pops, Munster has had 16 and 15 runs in the two games.
His individual stats read quite well but he stifles the attack , often the ball dies with him.
You can't have 4 points of attack it becomes disjointed, 3 works well.
The Roos attack…"

"But Munster and Grant play fast momentum game, while cleary plays very methodical. Moses plays both, Methodical or fast and he done it against the roosters and broncos. I'm glad moses is there because he'll go up another level. "

"Well Cleary plays way better with Moses than he does with other sixes. He suits having another elite half next to him that if cleary bums out, moses can save his ass. Saw it in game one."
