  • Yep, this is massive. So many of  those games that we just lost by a few points, I think you can put a lot of that down to this factor because when games are tight and you get into a grind, having a decent start to your set is so important. It's really hard to score points if you can't get onto a roll and you're constantly giving up territorial advantage.

It's one of the reasons I don't like Bevan on the wing, and particularly with Guth as fullback. You need two guys in your back three to be heavy. A light fullback can pass off to his winger for the bring back, other big winger gets in for a carry and then your quick guy is set up for a dummy half scoot on the third. We just can't carry Gutherson and Bevan in the back three together.

You suddenly go with Ferguson and Sivo as your two wingers, with Guth or French who both have good scoots, and you literally go from last to top four in terms of your metres from the back.

That's going to make a HUUUUGGGGGEEEE difference. Dying to get Sivo into that team!

    • And that’s were we missed Semi!!!

      • Semi has obviously carried French in terms of workload over the years but I get the feeling if it was someone other than French on the wing last season we would be near the Top 4 in this category.

        • Oh come on!  How do you come to that conclusion?  French was out for how long last season, while Semi was outside the heads.  We lost a lot in both sides of the wing positions add to that the disjointed halves working, Gutho being out for how long, of course none of that matters, it was all on French's shoulders.

Have a read of the list of backs in the article and that tells the story in full, not in part.

          • Over the course of 24 games each Back in Parramatta's back 3 would have averaged 107m per game.

French played in 18 matches only averaging 60m per game.

I'm not for one blaming the whole season on French but saying he largely contributes to us being last on this list.

            • He did not have the greatest of seasons, John but he was not by himself as I have said on that score, realistically and without going through other names in the backs how many of them actually did a lot for our season anyway?

Go back a season and French was great, better in defence when MJ was shifted to right centre to help defend that side, last season MJ goes where, his brother does fair in attack but gee how many tries did he let in? Their other brother ran all over the pair of them.

A big part of our losses was the failure with goal kicks, especially when penalties given in front of the posts, check the number of games that were lost by failed conversions plus the prospect of penalty shots, the opposition laughed at giving away penalties as they still won because the eels would not take the goal shots.

Storm, & Bronc's take every opportunity when a penalty is given, they win more than they lose as a result.  The problem is who is captain on the field and making poor onfield decisions??????

              • You don't need to defend yourself to me Colin.

I agree that there were more than just French who should be questioned regarding their performances last season.

Michael Jennings, Mitchell Moses and Corey Norman's performances were more detrimental to the side failing than French.

I'm very surprised the that the two remaining out of the three I mentioned are still with the club.

I wouldn't accept such pitiful performances from my marquee players if I was in charge and would of released them regardless of the payouts.

They were a disagrace to paying members last season!

  • This is the reason that French finished in Wenty last year and Hoffman can’t make it anymore. This is the new era for wingers and why the good ones are worth so much. I have seen the highlights of Sivo but can’t get excited till he is doing it against NRL opposition

Gutherson has not signed a new contract yet for the Eels and I am guessing that unless he gets what he wants he will look elsewhere. What he is after maybe contact value, coach and position (fullback) Whatever it is I think he may look around if not satisfied.

    • I don't believe that the blame should be squarely focussed on French, sure he had a bad year, but he was not alone in that, and as the article points out, how many in the backs were that good either?  French was down on confidence and even his public call to be the #1 failed even when given the chance, he also I doubt was fit from his injury and it hampered him.  I do not believe he has lost any of his attacking abilities that he showed in 2017, players don't have to be big just in frame, they need to be big in ability and know how to use it, French has it but he failed to live up to it last season. French is basically a lightweight or was last year and having had the injury that put him out, also affected his playing season, this year looking at training pics of him he appears to have bulked up somewhat from his 83Kg of last season, doubt he has lost much if any speed or other aerobic abilities though.

Sure the side missed Semi, but does that mean when one other player goes down, the rest of the team loses that much confidence they cannot win matches? Are we seeing another so called #7 curse coming up because we lose one player of ability and fail to find another to replace the departed?

The season from Hell is the season we needed, otherwise we can all walk away as eels supporters or fans, whichever bench wanting to be sat on, every player no matter their name or position will be pretty well auditioning for contract extensions or playing to be somewhere else.

19 players off contract end of this year, and 8 the end of 2020, 3 short of the NRL quota of players, big changes indeed are on the horizon, but it also provides for big chances for those able to take up the challenge.

      • You are right son. You are too blame.
