Personally I think it's a blight on our game.....in my mind if you invite the gambling fraternity in....you also invite match fixing and point fixing in .

It's a blight on broader society, there needs to be widespread reforms on the ease at which people can access sports betting. These mobile phone apps need to cease.
Unfortunately it is like smoking, the government make too much money on smoking so they try to legally do their part to stop it but don't want it to stop.
Gambling the same in sport where codes make too much money from it.
i gamble but only very small where when I lose it is very trivial.
I would argue that the government makes so much money through tobacco taxes. When you take into account the amount of money the government puts into health care. We all know the many health risks associated with smoking and with our heavily funded health service the money has to come from somewhere. What is costing all of us is the illegal imported tax free tobacco plus the unknown health risks associated with vaping.
Gambling on sport and racing took place long before corporate betting agencies and the TAB. SP ( starting price ) bookies were operating illegally long before the TAB started in the mid 60's. Gambling will always be part of sport, if it was made illegal, therefore not monitored, anything could happen.
It's a bit late. It's hypocrisy at its finest that they ban cigarette companies but allow gambling to be involved. Gambling arguably ruins just as many lives as lung cancer , I'd suggest far more . You either ban grog , smokes , gambling , the lot , or none at all.
Not too many people put their whole paycheck over the counter at the tobacconist or suicide over losing their house over their durry debts. But plenty of players with gambling problems are forced to run around with betting agencies plastered across their backs every weekend.
How betting agencies can be paying clubs millions of dollars and and it not be a conflict of interest is nothing short of corruption. Are we to believe that these agencies aren't privy to information that assists them in setting their odds therefore giving them an unfair advantage over the mug punter ? Ask yourselves why these agencies are involved with these clubs .
The game is rigged and agencies are pulling the strings .

I don't think anyone is saying those things should be banned, but utilising them needs to be made a lot less appealing. Speaking from personal experience I know several people who are completely hooked on the punt, like cannot stop no matter how much sense it makes to stop or what it's doing to their lives.
Do you know banks are now offerring mortgages on 40 year terms. Crazy, you are signing up to spend half your life in debt (pretty much your entire working life) and I haven't done the sums but the total interest would be massive. And with the goverment's latest stimulus package for first home buyers the market is going to ignite. Who's profiting from all of this? - the banks.
Australians are carrying debt later into life, often past pension age at 67 and are forced to work into their 70's. The actual age people are retiring is trending up each year, why?
Combine all these factors with the millions punters lose each year, the future for some isn't great. A bit of self control is needed, or when that fails government intervention. Like alcohol and tobacco it's going to take a while for change but hopefully it's coming.

Sorry I had a bit of a rant and then realised you were just talking about sponsorship re alcohol and tobacco. Those two have no association to sport but sport betting does, probably a little difficult to ban it when there's that link.
Sports betting gives a lot of people entertainment, a hobby and a sense of achievement. It fosters comraderie between mates, helps people socialise and provides many talking points and conversations. One could say it helps with communication and a sense of improved moods with achieving something. People have to use their brain and strategic thinking when placing their bet.
I understand it's an easy thing to point the finger at and condemn, but done in moderation and within limits and in the right spirit, it's an Aussie way to pass the time and catch up discussing with mates.
Of course their is the bad parts, but why should bad people or bad parts ruin it for the masses. Police the match mixing and provide help to those addicted. Just like every other part of society.
Dont throw the bath out with the bathwater.
P.S I rarely have a punt unless with mates, family etc for the social aspect of it. To win is awesome and a loss isn't really worth worry about with the amounts $$ i'm talking about.
Great responses, I find it difficult to reconcile, how as some have said, that insider information isn't being leaked for a price. Over the last 5 or so years, especially in the nrl there's been some questionable outcomes to say the least. Scenario if you will, premiership heavy weights start very badly, odds increase dramatically, said team starts a mid year rebound, odds decrease ...of course. How many and who got on the increased odds ? Coincidence perhaps, in the round ball game, even some officials have been nabbed as well as players, food for thought i guess
Of course it's rigged 🤣 Brisbane Lions won back to back to keep AFL alive in Qld Who will the NRL select to win? Melbourne Storm to keep game alive in Victoria ? Or Brisbane to fight against AFL or Panthers
"He's not worth 1 million, thats Cameron Munster or Deardon money. Dylan is too hit and miss to be wearing that, and Newcastle are obviously buying him as an organiser, which he can't do and never will. He's worth 75o tops"
"One thing Melbourne are very good at is identifying his job and that's all the given foward or back has to do and that's all that's happening with Stefano he's being the physical middle that's attracting a lot of defensive numbers and is making…"
"Based on his 2020-2024 form he is definitely worth $1M. It was only this year he fell off a cliff. Is this year an outlier or the new normal? I guess we'll find out."
