Any club which signs Zac Lomax may be forced to carry his $800,000 value in their salary cap.
Under NRL rules, players who are contracted are unable to move clubs for less money. That means despite Lomax cutting ties with St George Illawarra — the value of the remaining two years of his rich Red-V contract could still be included in his new club’s salary cap even if he agrees to a deal worth less than his Dragons contract.

The difference generally remains in the new club’s salary cap.

Clubs are able to write to the NRL to seek an exemption to the rule. It is rare though.

Tyrone Peachey was allowed to leave the Tigers and return to Penrith for less money than what he had originally signed on to join the Tigers. That happened with the NRL’s blessing.

The NRL would need to determine that Lomax’s new deal — most likely with Parramatta — represents his new market value.

That deal is expected to be worth about $700,000 for the next three or four seasons, which still represents a significant payday. NSW Origin centre Bradman Best received about the same to re-sign with the Knights.

Lomax inked his mega six-year contract with the Dragons in 2019 which included a final-year option in his favour which he had already taken up.

The deal remains the longest in St George Illawarra’s history, alongside Ben Hunt’s multimillion-dollar contract, who remains at the club despite requesting his own release last year.

The Dragons had earmarked Lomax to be their long-term fullback under former coach Paul McGregor, and the size of the deal indicated as such.

  • The fact  the NRL had allowed  Peachy and the Panthers to not have to include his previous contract value on their cap makes this a non issue for Parramatta .

You can't do one thing for one club and not the other , but in saying that Parramatta has people running the club who have zero backbone to fight for the club to be treated fairly.

    • Yep

      Yep

    • I think there is a miss print in the article title.

'Any club which signs Zac Lomax may be forced to carry his $800,000 value in their salary cap......Unless you are Roosters, Panthers, Storm or Broncos'. That's better.

      • That's about the size of it LB.

      • No doubt.

    • Different rules from them. Just like when TPJ was able to sign with them in round 21 which is way past the mid year deadline. Or when Taylan May got his suspension pushed back to the following year as they didn't wanna upset the fans

  • Roosters and lodge?

Broncos and Tavita - Pangai ?

    Bateman and Tigers?

    The NRL are very selective

  • It's very confusing. I may be wrong, or misread an article, I thought the Dragons cut Lomax's final 2yrs of his contract, which technically makes him a free agent and able to negotiate with any club for any amount.

  • Isn't it funny how as soon as it's Parramatta these issues arise. Same as when we wanted to sign Lodge , then the Roosters signed him and not a single article arose around the huge price tag we had to factor in .  It's because our management are the corporate version of cuckolds.  Wouldn't happen if we had someone like Fitzy running the joint.  It's a shame things are so sour with him as he'd make a great Head of Football instead of that limp dicked Oneill. Or even a Brian Smith in that role.

Why wernt the Roosters forced to pay the same price for Jenko as we had his contract registered for when we had to release him ?   Probably the same reason that allowed them to register a convicted rapist and DV abuser , yet we couldn't register Curtis Scott who had lesser charges , because they're The Roosters.
